CASCAR Castrol Super Series - Weekend Wrap
27 July 1999
Micks wins at Cayuga again / Sales soars at PGARA KOMOKA, ON - Kerry Micks won his second consecutive CASCAR Castrol Super Series East race at Cayuga Speedway on Sunday afternoon. The Ford Fast Lane Taurus driver's win was especially sweet, given that it came in his sponsor's event; the Ford Quality Care 250. The Mt. Albert, ON racer lined up on the inside of the fifth row in the field of 39 starters for the 250 lap race. Many of the front runners opted to pit for gas and tires at lap 50, but not Micks, who remained on the track and was running in third place - behind series points leader Don Thomson (Home Hardware Chevrolet) and Ron Beauchamp Jr. (Mopar Performance Parts / Mr. Sub Dodge). Thomson looked well in control of the race at that point, but an electrical problem started to crop up on lap 82 and the black Chevy started to sputter. The Hamilton, ON native had a healthy lead when his troubles started, but after a few laps of accelerating and decelerating, Beauchamp was able to take the lead from him on lap 89. Thomson pitted on lap 95 and the team lost many laps before identifying a faulty ignition module as the culprit. Thomson would eventually finish 24th, thereby tightening the Eastern points chase considerably. After dogging Beauchamp for several laps, Micks nudged ahead and into the lead on lap 109 as the leader got bogged down in traffic. Micks led until lap 147, at which time polesitter Al Turner (Blue Streak Dodge) took the point. Both pitted a few laps later, however, when the caution flag emerged for a spin by Brad Jacques (Exide Dodge). That put Pete Vanderwyst (Loctite Chevy) in front for the final 100 lap run to the finish. Following another caution (lap 187) Vanderwyst led Neil Fair (Skoal Inc. Monte Carlo), Turner and Micks. A pair of backmarkers battling for position sent one of them into the side of Fair's car on lap 204. The right side of his car was torn off, but he somehow managed to retain second place. But the car wasn't as strong as before the hit. The lap 213 restart saw Turner move to second, past Fair. Micks shuffled Fair to fourth on lap 227 and set out after Turner. Micks' Taurus had the freshest tires of the contenders and he was able to take second on lap 235. After several laps of intense pressure, Vanderwyst's older tires betrayed him and he went too high into the third turn, leaving the door open for Micks, who took full advantage. Turner would follow the Ford driver, into second place, and they finished: Micks, Turner and Vanderwyst. "Wow, two in a row. Unbelievable," smiled Micks, after his second win in one month at Cayuga. "I can't believe we won both of 'em here this year. We have pretty good runs here when things don't happen. I saw the guys who pitted at 50 laps and thought they were going to be out of tires at the end of the race. That's what happened to Vanderwyst." And for the second week in a row, it was a British Columbian who took the checkered flag in front of the home province crowd. Don Sales of Quesnel, BC started the Auto Tire Magic 150 on the outside of the front row and nabbed the lead by the end of the first lap. A caution flag immediately after the completion of the first circuit slowed the race for 10 laps. Back under green, Sales effectively dominated the race, leading all but one lap (132) en route to the victory. Prince George's Al Gandy was scored ahead of Sales for that lone lap; the only blemish on an otherwise perfect outing for Sales. At the finish, the Skoal Inc. Chevrolet Monte Carlo driver held a safe 2.23 second lead on last week's winner, Steve Jefferson (Mopar Batteries Dodge). Second year driver Fred DelPero continues to impress and took third in the Prince George race. As much as anything, the fifth race of the western season was notable for who wasn't in the starting line-up. During practice for the Auto Tire Magic 150, Ford Quality Care Service Taurus driver Kevin Dowler lost an oil line and slid on his own fluid into the outside retaining wall. The impact crumpled his machine and sent him to hospital where he was diagnosed with a broken shoulder. On the positive side, he later returned to the speedway. The obvious question is whether or not the Edmontonian will be able to compete in the two National series events in his home province. The first of those is in Calgary on Aug. 6-8, and is followed by the Edmonton City Centre Airport road course event one week later. CASCAR Castrol Super Series (Western Series) Points Standings as of July 24, 1999: 1. Dan Shirley (Chevrolet / 846 points/); 2. Steve Jefferson (Dodge /844); 3. Don Sales (Chevrolet / 796); 4.
