CASCAR: Micks Sweeps Cayuga Events in '99
26 July 1999
NELLES CORNERS, ON - When it comes to racing at Cayuga Speedway, CASCAR Castrol Super Series East driver Kerry Micks knows what it takes to win. The Ford Fast Lane Taurus racer won his second feature race of the summer at the 5/8-mile oval, on Sunday afternoon, in the Ford Quality Care 250. The Mt. Albert, ON resident started ninth in the field of 39 competitors for the eighth Eastern Super Series event of the season and took the lead for the final time with just 17 laps remaining in the 250 lap affair. For the second weekend in a row, Blue Streak Dodge driver Al Turner came across in second place. The Barrie, ON driver started on the pole and was a contender throughout, having led twice for extended periods on Sunday afternoon. The final podium position went to Pete Vanderwyst in the Loctite Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The St. Thomas, ON native started the race on the outside pole, and used a crafty pit strategy to emerge with the lead on lap 150. But as the race wore down, Vanderwyst's older tires were no match for the charging Micks and Turner. Points leader Don Thomson endured electrical problems in the Ford Quality Care 250 and finished 24th, to tighten the Eastern Series' championship chase.
