NHRA: Bowen Two for Two in Federal-Mogul Dragsters

26 July 1999

MARTIN, Mich.- Shawn Bowen, of Montrose, Mich, is two for two in as
many weeks at the Coca-Cola Parts Plus Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series
event in Martin, Mich. Bowen won last weekend's event at Quaker City in
Salem, Ohio. The NHRA North Central Division event at US 131 Dragway went
late into the night as the last pair of more than 400 cars crossed the
finishline just before 1:00 a.m. Sunday morning.

Bowen's Muffler Man dragster took out Okemos, Michigan's Mike Miller in the
final round recording a 5.806 second pass at 244.15 mph. Miller was clocked
at 5.922 seconds at 234.53 mph.

"Two in a row is great for the Bowen Racing Team" said an exhausted Bowen
just prior to the winner's circle ceremony. "This puts us a head of Bill
(Reichert) in the points. We kicked the rods out of the motor in the
semi-finals and struggled all day. When it's you day, it's just your day."

Ed Bennett also made his second trip to the winner's circle in two weeks as
he ousted Fred Allen in Comp. Eliminator. Bennett from Carleton, Mich., ran
a 7.148 at 191.47 to Allen's 7.710, 160.23 mph pass.

In Federal-Mogul Funny Car, Marc White and John Lawson made it an all
Illinois final with White, the defending event and division champion,
catching Lawson at the finishline for the win. White covered the quarter
mile in 6.034 seconds at 243.38 mph to Lawson's 6.101, 238.02.

"He used me up on the line" White commented after the win. "This win goes
to the Etterman Racing Team. They won this race, not me."

Lawson took the early lead off the starting line but could not hold off the
quicker Rydan Decal Funny Car of White.

The win puts White and Lawson in a tie for the Funny Car points chase after
this, the mid-way point in the North Central Division.
