Department of Justice Requests Additional AK Steel-Armco Merger Information
    MIDDLETOWN, Ohio, July 23 -- AK Steel today said
that the U.S. Department of Justice has completed its initial phase review
under Hart-Scott-Rodino of the proposed merger between AK Steel Corporation
and Armco Inc., and has issued a request for additional information which is
limited in scope.
    AK Steel continues to believe the Department of Justice review will be
satisfactorily addressed on a timely basis, and that the proposed merger will
be completed by September 30, 1999, or shortly thereafter.
    AK Steel produces flat-rolled steel products for automotive, appliance,
construction and manufacturing industries.  The company employs about 5,800
men and women in its plants and offices in Middletown, Ohio, Ashland, Kentucky
and Rockport, Indiana.
