Delphi Earns Environmental Recognition from General Motors
TROY, Mich., July 23 -- Delphi Automotive Systems
announced today that six facilities have earned environmental awards from
General Motors . Two Delphi facilities won GM's "WE CARE" (Waste
Elimination & Cost Awareness Reward Everyone) award in the Materials
Conservation/Pollution Prevention category, and four plants won in the Energy
Conservation category. The awards recognize leadership in waste reduction,
cost savings, innovation, transferability and effectiveness in reducing
environmental impacts, as well as the identification and implementation of
energy conservation worldwide.

1999 WE CARE Award Program for Materials Conservation/Pollution Prevention
In the Materials Conservation/Pollution Prevention category, Delphi's
Energy & Engine Management Systems operation in Wyoming, Mich., developed in-
process recovery and reuse of waste mineral seal oil, saving 343 tons of waste
per year. The plant experienced payback on its investment within one week.
The Delphi Componentes Mecanicos de Matamoros plant in Matamoros, Mexico,
also won in this category for modifications to an instrument panel mold,
eliminating the need for 2 million feet per year of foam tape in a production
process. Payback on the investment was realized in less than one day.
"Winning the GM WE CARE awards reflects our dedication to maximizing
efficient use of our resources while protecting the environment," said Rod
Brickey, Delphi's director of facilities services. "The improvements we've
implemented as a result of competing for these awards will be shared
throughout Delphi."
Delphi facilities comprised eight of the 49 nominations. Winners are
chosen by a team from GM's Environmental Services Staff. To be eligible for
the award, which is given to facilities that identify and implement materials
conservation/pollution prevention in North America, candidate facilities must
meet the following criteria:

    *  Reduce volumes of wastes, toxicity, emissions and raw materials;
    *  Recognize ongoing cost savings;
    *  Demonstrate innovation;
    * Demonstrate effectiveness in transferability, ease of implementation,
employee participation and employee acceptance.

The average payback time for the nominated Delphi projects was
approximately two weeks.
Many of the Delphi facilities nominated for the WE CARE award for
Materials Conservation/Pollution Prevention are also nominated for the
national 1999 Pollution Prevention Roundtable awards. The Pollution
Prevention Roundtable is an independent organization of state pollution
prevention staff members. Winners will be announced in September.

1999 WE CARE Award Program for Energy Conservation
Three Delphi facilities received WE CARE Energy Conservation awards.
Delphi facilities represented 19 of the 95 nominations.
Delphi Saginaw Steering division's Holland Road Plant 4 won in the
Facilities and Equipment category. The facility installed rapid roll doors on
a shipping dock, generating an annual energy savings of 4,555 mmBtu's, and
expects to see payback on investment in 21 months.
Delphi's Energy & Engine Management Systems division's Wyoming, Mich.,
plant energy teams completed 40 projects in 1998, meeting the plant's five
percent energy reduction goal. The facility will save 41,670 mmBtu's of
energy annually as a result of the 40 projects.
Delphi's Saginaw Steering division's Holland Road (Plants 3-7) conducted
energy surveys to provide feedback on non-productive period energy use and
track continuous improvement. The facility is experiencing immediate savings
of 64,885 mmBtu's annual energy use.
Delphi's Energy & Engine Management Systems' Flint East plant won an
Energy Forecasting award for most accurately forecasting natural gas usage
four times during 1998, based on a comparison of predicted to actual usage.
The plant also received a Delphi recognition for powerhouse
decentralization resulting in improved steam efficiency and reduced operating
costs. Flint East expects an annual energy reduction of 409,782 mmBtu's, with
payback achieved in 2-1/2 years.
Criteria for the Energy Conservation award includes savings, payback,
originality, applicability and relative savings.
