CASCAR: Whitlock Motorsports has a ball in Toronto
21 July 1999
PETROLIA, ON - Dave Whitlock and Mark Dilley took part in the inaugural Miller Lite 100 at the Toronto Molson Indy this past weekend. Although the on-track results in Saturday's 34 lap CASCAR Castrol Super Series East feature event weren't what they were hoping for, both enjoyed their time in Toronto and were extremely pleased with the level of exposure the event offered their teams and the series. The Ford Quality Care Taurus of Dave Whitlock was having a solid weekend right up until the final few laps of the event on the temporary street circuit on the grounds of Exhibition Place. The Whitlock Motorsports #98 entry started 14th in the field of 35 CASCAR Late Models and was running ninth when he became entangled with a driver he was attempting to pass. The ensuing spin by both of them left Whitlock 19th in the final standings. "We were really pleased. We practiced a few days before the race and made a chassis setup adjustment for the race," said Whitlock of his team's progress during the practice and qualifying sessions on Friday. "Early on [in Saturday's race], we held our position. I think we dropped a few spots, but then started picking off cars, one at a time. "Some guys fell out, and by 10 or 12 to go, we were sitting in ninth. I had three or four cars right in front of me, so I thought we had a decent shot at fifth. We would have been pleased with that. We were getting near the end and I got up behind the bunch and I tried to pass Rob Neely. He was blocking and wouldn't let me pass. Finally, he made a mistake and drifted up high. I put the car in underneath him and when he saw I was there, he tried to get back in line and we both spun out. It happened on the hard lefthander of turn 5. It was unfortunate. The Quality Care Taurus was working well. We were gunning for a fifth or sixth, but instead, we got a 19th." But even with the disappointment of losing so many spots near the end of the race, Whitlock thoroughly enjoyed his weekend at the Indy. "It was a great experience. I know the exposure that CASCAR got was phenomenal. And from the reaction I've heard, the fans thought it was a great race. So, hopefully, the attendance figures are up for today and we'll be back next year." Like Whitlock, Mark Dilley's results weren't what he'd hoped for in the Miller Lite 100. His Ultra Motorsports NTN Bearing / Herbrand Tools Ford Taurus qualified 15th for the race, but only lasted four laps before a blown motor ended his day. "It blew up. On lap four, it blew up on the back chute and that was it. I went off and relaxed for the rest of the way. I came back and was at the NTN hospitality suite for most of the race. It was nice, but disappointing. I loved it, though. It was awesome and I hope we get asked back. I think it looked good." Race Summary: Road racing is a definite talent and Robin Buck demonstrated that he's a master of turning left and right on Saturday afternoon. The Oakville, ON racer started on the pole and emerged with the lead after an early race battle with Billy Rowse. Al Turner joined the fray and was able to wrestle second from Rowse near the end of the event. The victory podium featured the smiling faces of Buck, Turner and Rowse as they took the top three spots in CASCAR's inaugural visit to the streets of Toronto. Next Up: Whitlock Motorsports is looking to get back on track this weekend at Cayuga Speedway for the Ford Quality Care 250 at the 5/8-mile Hamilton, ON area oval. The Sunday afternoon event is the culmination of a hectic racing weekend for the Ford teams. On Friday, Whitlock's #98 Ford Taurus will participate in a parade in the streets of Hamilton (starting at City Hall at 12:30), followed by a pit stop competition (open to the public) at the Centre Mall (from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.). And at 7:00, CASCAR's top pit crews will battle it out in a pit stop challenge at the Centre Mall. Time Trials and qualifying heat races for the Ford Quality Care 250 will be held on Saturday afternoon at Cayuga Speedway, with the feature race scheduled for the following afternoon. - 30 -
