Alliance Adds 11th Automaker With Isuzu Membership
WASHINGTON, July 15 -- The Alliance of Automobile
Manufacturers today announced that Isuzu Motors America, Inc. has joined as
the eleventh member of the association.
"The Alliance serves as a unified voice for the automobile industry in
America on important issues such as the environment and vehicle safety," said
Josephine Cooper, President, Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. "The
Alliance is committed to improving both the environment and motor vehicle
safety through policies that are crafted intelligently, carefully and through
constructive collaboration between us, the regulatory community and Congress.
We are pleased that Isuzu has joined us in this endeavor."
Isuzu Motors America, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Isuzu Motors
Limited, which is active in diesel-technology development, production and
engine design, and manufacturing of sport utility vehicles and commercial
vehicles. In addition to sales of domestically produced vehicles and engines,
Isuzu Motors America, Inc. conducts automotive research and design; imports
vehicles, diesel engines, and service parts for distribution to Isuzu
commercial vehicle, SUV and diesel engine distributors nationwide through
American Isuzu Motors, Inc.
Isuzu produces sport utility vehicles in the United States at its plant in
Lafayette, Indiana, which is a joint venture with Fuji Heavy Industries. In
1998 Isuzu Motors America, Inc. and General Motors established a joint
venture, DMAX, Ltd., to manufacture diesel engines in Moraine, Ohio. Isuzu
currently has over 800 employees in the United States, not including its joint
venture associates.
Isuzu's membership in the Alliance became effective on July 1, 1999. The
Alliance was formed in January 1999 to represent the common interests of its
members on a broad range of public policy issues. In addition to Isuzu,
member companies are BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Fiat, Ford, General Motors, Mazda,
Nissan, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo.
The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers is a coalition of car and light
truck manufacturers. Alliance member companies have approximately 600,000
employees in the United States, with 255 manufacturing facilities in 33
states. Alliance members represent more than 90 percent of U.S. vehicle
sales.
