CASCAR: Dilley tops Ford troops with seventh at Mosport

13 July 1999

MOSPORT, ON - Late in the CDS Tech 200 CASCAR Castrol Super Series East
race at Mosport Speedway on Sunday afternoon, Ford drivers appeared set to
notch several top finishes. However, a flat tire on the Ford Quality Care
Service Taurus of Dave Whitlock induced a lap 158 spin which sent him up to
the wall in turn 2 of the half-mile oval. In the process, he gathered his
Ford teammate Mark Dilley, who had been running behind him in sixth place
at the time of the incident.

Dilley was able to recover from the bump and went on to record a
seventh-place finish in his NTN Bearings / Herbrand Tools Taurus. Whitlock,
however, lost several laps making repairs and eventually finished 13th.

Ford Fast Lane driver Kerry Micks was hoping to back up his win in the
Cayuga 250 a few weeks ago with another strong CASCAR outing, but it wasn't
to be. The Mt. Albert, ON racer started 14th in the 200 lap race and was in
the lead by lap 114. He held the spot for a couple of laps, and was
battling Ottawa, ON driver Al Long for third on lap 134 when Long turned
into Micks, cutting the tire on the #02 Ford. Micks' crew made a quick tire
change, allowing their driver to return to action just one lap behind the
leaders.

During a late-race restart, Micks jumped ahead of the race leaders in an
attempt to get back on the lead lap, but was involved in racing incident
with eventual race winner Don Thomson. Kerry's car came around in turns 1-2
and lost several more laps under caution. Micks eventually returned to the
race, and finished 20th.

C.A.G. Ford Taurus driver Kelly Williams had a strong start to the
weekend. CASCAR's lone full-time female competitor started third in the
race and ran in that spot for the first half of the CDS Tech 200 until
pitting, under caution, with the other leaders on lap 103.

During the second half of the event, Williams' car developed mechanical
problems and she went on to take 16th at the end. Ford Taurus drivers Dave
Jacombs, Kevin Trevellin and Steve Robblee were 25th, 30th and 31st,
respectively in CASCAR's first Mosport oval visit since 1996.

Race Notes: Hamilton, ON racer Don Thomson Jr. continued to show why he's
dominating the CASCAR Castrol Super Series East points by winning both the
pole and the feature at Mosport Speedway. After six events, Thomson has
captured three checkered flags. Second place went to Peter Gibbons, while
Pete Vanderwyst completed the podium finishers... During qualifying for the
CDS Tech 200 at Mosport, Ford Fast Lane Taurus driver Kerry Micks won the
first heat (on Saturday night)... Ford drivers Kelly Williams and Dave
Whitlock shared the second row on Sunday's starting grid after posting the
third and fourth-fastest laps, respectively, during time trials.

Coming up: The upcoming weekend will be a double-header for the CASCAR
Castrol Super Series. The Eastern tour is on track at the Toronto Molson
Indy for what is billed as the biggest event in the sanctioning body's
history. The Miller Lite 100 will take place on Saturday afternoon (July
17). Practice and qualifying are slated for Friday.
Edmonton's Kevin Dowler is one of a several Western series regulars who
will be very busy. The Ford Quality Care Service driver is in the heat of
the Western points battle, but was so intent on competing in Toronto that
he's racing on Saturday in Toronto and then jetting to Quesnel, British
Columbia for Sunday's Super Series West event. Prior to turning his
attention to CASCAR, Dowler was one of Canada's top road racers and is a
favourite to do well in this weekend's CASCAR Indy debut. Dowler won the
road course National series event at the Edmonton City Centre Airport last
summer, and in doing so, became the first non-Eastern winner of a CASCAR
National race.
