Lobbyist, Tim MacCarthy, Retires from Nissan Government Affairs Post: Takes on Consulting Position with Nissan- Vines Takes on Additional Responsibilities as Head Of Nissan's Washington D.C. Operations - CARSON, Calif., July 12 -- Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) announced today the retirement of Timothy C. MacCarthy from the position of vice president, government affairs. Jason H. Vines, vice president of corporate communications, will take responsibility for Nissan's operations in Washington D.C. MacCarthy who has held this position since 1992, said, "I have put in place one of the best government affairs operations in the industry and I am looking forward to new career challenges." "Tim has been a leader in the automotive government affairs arena. He was at the forefront of the campaign to stop the 25 percent tariff on MPVs, including the Nissan Pathfinder, and helped galvanize our Infiniti dealers during the threat of the 100 percent tariff on Japanese import luxury cars," said Nobuo Araki, president of NNA. "Tim also played a key role in the negotiations which resulted in the formation of the 'Alliance,' our new trade organization. He has set a solid foundation for Nissan's D.C. activities and we wish him well with his retirement." MacCarthy joined NNA in November 1990 as director of government affairs and was promoted to vice president of government affairs in January 1992. Prior to joining NNA, MacCarthy was director and manager of the federal liaison department for the Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association (MVMA). He also served as special programs coordinator for the National Park Service, minority counsel for the Intergovernmental Relations Subcommittee of the Senate Government Operations Committee, and legislative aide to U.S. Senator Edward Gurney. MacCarthy will assist Vines as a consultant for Nissan's Washington Office. Vines, a 16-year veteran of the automotive industry, joined Nissan in 1998 as vice president of corporate communications. In this role, he is responsible for directing all aspects of the communications function -- product public relations, public affairs, corporate affairs and community outreach. Prior to joining Nissan, Vines was with the former Chrysler Corporation where he served in a variety of communications and labor relations positions. Vines is no stranger to the Washington D.C. government affairs arena. From 1993 to 1996, Chrysler loaned Vines to the American Automobile Manufacturers Association (AAMA) where he served as a major media strategist for then-president Andrew Card. He later held the position of director of public affairs in Chrysler's D.C. office. Most recently, Vines was named to Automotive News' All-Star team for his leadership in Nissan's "Back-to-Basics" public relations efforts.
