CASCAR: Thomson takes third CASCAR win of '99 at Mosport in CDS Tech 200
13 July 1999
KOMOKA, ON - CASCAR Castrol Super Series East points leader Don Thomson is in the midst of a dream season. The Home Hardware Chevrolet Monte Carlo driver has topped the standings since the second race of the season and continues to turn up the heat in his quest for his first CASCAR crown. The Hamilton, ON racer picked up his third CASCAR feature win of the season, on Sunday afternoon at Mosport Speedway, in the CDS Technologies 200. Thomson was the fastest driver during Saturday's time trials, which earned him the pole for Sunday's 200 lap main event. He held the top spot for the first 53 laps, before waving fellow Chevy driver Pete Vanderwyst through to the front. Until that point, Vanderwyst's Loctite Monte Carlo was the only car capable of sticking with Thomson. "The car was great right off the trailer," said Thomson. "There's been a few times this year that it's been that good right out of the box, and this was one of them. I never had to change a thing today or all weekend. I just came in, got a splash of gas and just 'gave 'er'." Vanderwyst took the lead until lap 78, when Thomson reclaimed the point. A round of pit stops just past the halfway point juggled the order, as several of the lead cars made their mandatory visits to pit road. At that time, the top spot went to Peter Gibbons, of Stouffville, ON. Gibbons' Canadian Tire Chevy was fast, but a few mechanical gremlins threatened to spoil his race. His crew was able to correct a problem with the car's oiling system during a prolonged early-race caution. A broken suspension piece late in the event also affected the car's handling. A flat tire did little to help the situation, but Gibbons continued to charge and his tenacity paid off. He finished second, just .589 secs. behind Thomson at the finish. In the end, only Thomson had a relatively uneventful cruise to the finish. A late race restart saw he and the lapped car of Kerry Micks get together. Thomson continued on his way, while Micks' Ford Fast Lane Taurus spun in the first and second turns, collecting Vanderwyst in the process. Vanderwyst was able to resume, however, after pitting to replace a tire and to remove his dragging rear bumper. But he lost valuable track position in the exchange and could only recover to third place by the end of the race.
