CASCAR: Vanderwyst third in Mosport oval event
13 July 1999
MOSPORT, ON - Pete Vanderwyst earned a solid third-place finish at Mosport Speedway on Sunday afternoon. The Loctite Chevrolet Monte Carlo racer started second in the field of 31 competitors and was at or near the front all day. The third-place result would normally have been encouraging, but Vanderwyst was in the running for an even better finish. As the race wound down, the St. Thomas, ON driver was chasing polesitter Don Thomson for the lead when Vanderwyst was caught up in a spin involving Thomson and another driver. Thomson continued unscathed, while Pete's Loctite Chevy spun and was tagged hard in the back end. Following a stop to repair a cut tire and a hanging rear bumper, Vanderwyst returned to the race and battled from eighth place - with exhaust fumes in the drivers' compartment - to recover for the podium finish. "It was a hard day. We had a fast car," said the Loctite driver after the race. "When we came into pit [just after lap 100], I took a new tire and I was just saving the car because I knew I could run with Donnie [Thomson] and take a shot at getting by him. I knew I could get underneath him. "Three or four times, we could get right up on his bumper. But we ran him clean and he's always been that way with us. On that last restart, Donnie and Kerry [Micks] got together and Kerry Micks came across and clipped me. I thought I could get by him, but we got turned and it knocked the exhaust a bit and the fumes were coming in the car after that." Some quick pit work by the crew of the Loctite Chevrolet got their car back on track. "We got going again without losing a lap and after we pitted to remove the bumper - which was dragging - we were about eighth. At the same time, we cut the right-front tire and after that, the car just wasn't the same as it was before. But we were still stronger than some of the other guys on the lead lap and we were able to make up some spots near the end. "We were trying and I drove my guts out for the guys. Lapped cars were a lot better today than they have been in the past, so I'd like to thank them for that. But man, we were right there with a shot to get that first win and to get caught up like that was hard to take. I thought we had it. It was hard after the accident. I was breathing through the tube that led to the cool-box in the trunk to get some fresh air." But even though he'd hoped for more, Vanderwyst was encouraged by his team's performances of late. "My guys did a fabulous job getting the car ready, just like they have all year. We've been fast at every track and we know the results are going to come soon. Our performances have been better than the results, but we were right there again running with Don Thomson and he's been the class of the field all year." Race Notes: Don Thomson went on to win the CDS Tech 200 at Mosport Speedway. It was the third win of the season for the Hamilton, ON racer. Peter Gibbons was second, just ahead of Pete Vanderwyst. Looking ahead: The next event on the schedule for Pete Vanderwyst and the Loctite Chevy will be the Miller Lite 100 at the Toronto Molson Indy. Practice and qualifying are scheduled for Friday (July 16) with the race set to take place on Saturday afternoon (July 17). It's the first visit for the CASCAR drivers to the Toronto Indy. Pete and his team have been busy preparing for the big race. "We went and tested on Friday at Shannonville and we've got the road course car in great shape as we're heading to the Molson Indy. It's working pretty well, so we're confident heading there."
