CON-WAY Announces 3-Day Service From Western New York and Pennsylvania to California; Transit Time Cut by One Day
ANN ARBOR, Mich.--July 8, 1999--Con-Way Transportation Services, a national network of regional trucking companies, announced today 3-day coast-to-coast service for businesses moving freight from western New York and Pennsylvania to California. The premium service, which covers almost 3,000 miles, extends CON-WAY's coast-to-coast service capabilities and compares with typical less-than-truckload (LTL) times of five days or more to cross the country. "If you want faster service the only alternative is by air," said Bryan Millican, CON-WAY's executive vice president, sales and marketing.
"We have refined our loading and linehaul operations, which has enabled us to eliminate a full day of LTL transit time to most California markets," said Millican. "We can move shipments from the western New York Geneva, Canandaigua and Waterloo areas to California destinations such as Irvine, Long Beach and Fresno within a three-day timeframe. Moreover, we can do it with the same consistency as we can in our regional traffic lanes."
This service provides a niche opportunity for shippers requiring a high level of fast service. The product is in response to rapidly growing business volume in transcontinental lanes that has exceeded CON-WAY'S expectations.
CON-WAY began providing full coast-to-coast service in April, 1998, when it completed linkages among it three regional LTL trucking companies - Con-Way Central Express, Con-Way Southern Express and Con-Way Western Express.
CON-WAY said its success with providing seamless long-haul service does not mean that it's changing its core business strategy of providing regional, LTL service. "We are and always will be principally focused on regional coverage, emphasizing next-day and second-day delivery," Millican said. "Sixty-five percent of the shipments tendered to us are delivered 'next day,' and over 95 percent of our customers' freight is delivered within two days of pick-up by CON-WAY."
