Global Engineering Documents and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association Announce the Release of Guide Providing Sound Engineering Guidelines
ROSSLYN, Va.--July 8, 1999--NEMA, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, in cooperation with Global Engineering Documents, the world's leading distributor of industry, U.S. and International standards, announces the release of NEMA's Guide to Preparing a Design Proposal for Paralleling Customer Generation with an Electric Utility.Available for immediate delivery through Global Engineering Documents, this guide takes the mystery out of interface design for parallel operation by providing sound engineering guidelines.
"Paralleling is generating electricity in parallel with the utility," says NEMA program manager Gerard Winstanley. "A straight standby generator kicks in after the power has gone off and must be switched off when the power comes back on. Paralleling allows either uninterruption or cogeneration (i.e., the generator and the utility provide power at the same time)." It is becoming more common, he notes, as facilities such as hospitals use it to prevent power outages. "It is important to do it right or you could blackout half a city."
NEMA's guide also assists the designer with the utility approval process. The guide states that careful planning, design and proposal preparation are the keys to assuring successful coordination and approval by the electric utility company.
"A guide of this sort -- researched, drafted and finalized by a task force of the manufacturers of this equipment, each an expert in the field -- can be invaluable to a consulting or electrical engineer charged with the design of such a system," says Ken Dow, director, industry standards, at Russelectric Inc. "The very nature of these systems, which parallels a utility supply with a separate emergency system on the same grid, raises many questions and doubts with the involved utility company. This document will serve to help the designer answer these questions and obtain speedy approval and acceptance of the system by the utility."
