CASCAR Returns to Mosport Speedway for CDS Tech 200
9 July 1999
KOMOKA, ON - CASCAR makes its return to the Mosport Speedway oval this weekend for the CDS Tech 200 Eastern tour event. It's been several seasons since the CASCAR Castrol Super Series last held a race on the half-mile, banked oval. The July 10-11 show will be the closest CASCAR oval event to the Greater Toronto Area held this summer and should draw upwards of 40 drivers and teams. The Mosport track features a wide racing surface, relatively tight turns and lengthy straightaways. The consensus among the CASCAR drivers is that they're glad to be returning to the track after a two-year hiatus. It was the fall of 1996 when CASCAR last visited the Mosport oval. Entering the race, Hamilton, ON racer Don Thomson Jr. holds a 54-point lead in the Eastern points chase, over Ancaster, ON driver Neil Fair. Peter Gibbons, Kerry Micks and DJ Kennington complete the top five and are all within striking distance. Thomson, who drives the Home Hardware Chevrolet Monte Carlo, finished 21st in the Cayuga 250 on June 26 and is looking forward to the CDS Tech 200 at Mosport Speedway to get back on track. Ford Fast Lane Taurus driver Kerry Micks will head to Mosport still smiling after his win at Cayuga. The Mt. Albert, ON racer was the first Eastern non-Chevrolet driver to break through to the winner's circle in '99, claiming victory in the fifth race of the season. Time Trials for the CDS Tech 200 commence Saturday at 2:00 p.m., with heat races at 3:00. The autograph session for Sunday's feature race begins at 12:15 p.m., with the green flag set to fall at 2:00. Several other classes of cars will be taking part in the CDS Tech 200 race weekend at Mosport. The popular Open Wheel Modifieds and the ChampCar Lights will be on Sunday's race card and will contest their feature races following the CASCAR main. CASCAR Notes:... In addition to planning for the CDS Tech 200 at Mosport Speedway, the majority of the Eastern series drivers have been busy preparing for the Miller Lite 100 CASCAR Castrol Super Series race at the Toronto Molson Indy on July 16-18. Almost all of the regular Eastern competitors are planning to take part in CASCAR's first visit to the Indy. As well, several Western drivers will be making the trip... CASCAR still has some tickets available to the 'CASCAR Chalet' at the Toronto Molson Indy. Passes include prime seating, meals and access to all the action. For more information, contact Chris at (519) 641-1214... As part of CASCAR's debut at the Toronto Molson Indy, CASCAR and Inside Track Motorsport News are co-hosting the 'Inside Track / CASCAR / Miller Lite 100 Party' at Vinnie's restaurant on Wednesday, July 14. Located at 22 Duncan Street (at Adelaide) in downtown Toronto, the party at Vinnie's will start at 7 p.m. and is open to the public. It will feature racing simulator games against CASCAR, Indy Lights, Formula Ford, Motorola Cup and Toyota Canada Superbike racers. Several CASCAR Late Models will also be on display.
