STOCKS: 'Spicy' Raceing Weekend Scheduled at Irwindale, July 17-18

NASCAR Super Late Models, Street Stocks, & Mini-Stocks on Friday Night, Star Formula Mazda Cars, NASCAR Late Models, & Ultra Wheel Spec Trucks on Saturday! Irwindale, Calif. - - Two nights of racing, six different divisions and hundreds of laps of up-close-and-personal short track action, all at America's newest ½-mile superspeedway … It's Irwindale Speedway, on July 16th and 17th. Of special interest will be the Star Formula Mazda Cars, Irwindale's feature event for the 17th. This will be the first-ever event for open-wheel rear-motored formula cars and should be a very interesting one. Star Mazdas are all identical race cars, each with exactly the same, chassis, tires, motor (and horsepower rating). Each is also "equipped" with a driver who knows that the other drivers in the class don't have any technological advantage over them. As one keen observer recently remarked, "On the wide, fast Irwindale half-mile, the Formula Mazda Cars will look like 'Indy Cars on the Mile.'" Intense, will be a good word for it, but then, just about every race at Irwindale has a sky-high intensity level. Close-seated fans, a great racing surface, wide perfectly-banked turns, and perfect lighting go a long way toward making for super-competitive racing, every lap, every heat every main. Proving the point, a recent 250-lapper at Irwindale was decided by less than half a car length over its 125-mile duration! Irwindale Speedway, which opened on March 27,1999 is about a third of the way through its action-packed 1999 inaugural season, with thousands of laps of high speed racing action entertainment still to come.
