EG&G Sells Automotive Testing Unit to GenTek IncWELLESLEY, Mass., July 7 -- EG&G, Inc. , today announced the sale of its automotive structural testing division, Structural Kinematics, to Defiance Testing and Engineering Services, a subsidiary of GenTek Inc. , Hampton, New Hampshire. Both Structural Kinematics and Defiance are based in Troy, Michigan. The terms of the sale were not announced. "We feel that with the ongoing consolidation within the automotive supplier industry, divesting Structural Kinematics to Defiance will benefit customers, who increasingly seek larger suppliers that deliver a broader range of testing and engineering services," said Gregory L. Summe, EG&G chairman and CEO. "In addition, the divestiture allows EG&G to focus our resources on high- growth opportunities in other portfolio areas," he said. Structural Kinematics services the Big Three automakers and their key Tier 1 (preferred) suppliers. "The divestiture of Structural Kinematics does not affect our lubricants testing business, which we intend to grow aggressively," said Robert J. Rosenthal, president of EG&G Instruments. Structural Kinematics is a major, independent vehicle testing organization, which performs over 300 tests per year on cars, trucks, industrial and agricultural components and other vehicles. In business for nearly 20 years, the company conducts tests that are pivotal to the introduction of new automobile models. The division maintains three test laboratories, which house 14 full-vehicle simulators, and a variety of hydraulic test equipment that performs structural durability, fatigue testing, and safety testing.
