Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association Says Carmakers Bought $203.7 Billion in Car Parts Over Past 15 YearsRESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., July 6 -- The demand for original equipment (OE) auto parts in North America is growing, according to Automotive Industry Status Report -- the comprehensive report produced by the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA). In 1997, carmakers bought $203.7 billion in car parts from their suppliers, compared to the 1983 total of $89 billion. 1997 is the latest year for which statistics are available. Founded in 1904, MEMA exclusively represents and serves more than 700 U.S. manufacturers of motor vehicle components, tools and equipment, automotive chemicals, and related products used in the production, repair, and maintenance of all classes of motor vehicles.
