Exide Announces AutoZone Deal for Up to 600,000 Starters and Alternators
    READING, Pa., July 6 -- Sure Start, a division of Exide
Corporation , will sell between 200,000 and 600,000 remanufactured
automotive starters and alternators to AutoZone, one of the nation's leading
specialty retailers of automotive parts and accessories.
    According to Darby Rockney, senior vice president, sales and marketing for
Exide's battery associated companies, the deal, which was finalized last
month, could generate in excess of $8 million for the division.  This is the
first time AutoZone, operating 2,657 auto-parts outlets in 38 states, has
purchased Exide Sure Start products.
    "This new business from AutoZone is a testament to the continuous quality
control effort at our Cooper (TX) facility," Rockney explained.  "This new
business, when combined with recent business awarded to us by CSK Automotive
and Strauss Discount Auto, further validates our position as an industry
leader."
     Sure Start is one of the largest producers of remanufactured starters and
alternators.  Parent Exide Corporation, with annual revenues of more than
$2.3 billion and operations in 19 countries, is the world leader in the
manufacturing of lead-acid batteries.
