BMW Outperforms Luxury Car Competitors; U.S. Sales Exceed 78,000 For First Half of 1999WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J., July 2 -- BMW of North America, Inc. outsold all international luxury passenger car competitors during the first six months of 1999, reporting its best first half ever with sales of 78,103, a 17 percent increase, compared to 66,869 automobiles sold during the same period a year ago. BMW YTD sales are so strong that the company has sold more cars during the first six months of 1999 than were sold during all of 1990, '91, '92 and 1993. BMW also reported its best June on record with an increase of 28 percent for 14,476 automobiles, compared to 11,309 a year ago. "While every model line is up for the year, we're particularly gratified with the best-ever sales records set by our 5 and 7 Series," commented Victor Doolan, president of BMW of North America, Inc. Sales in the 5 and 7 Series range represents the best first half year total in the history of these models with an increase of 9.8 percent and 4.3 percent respectively. Land Rover North America, Inc. reported June sales of 2,645 vehicles, compared to 2,487 a year ago, an increase of 6.3 percent. Year-to-date sales jumped 35 percent, to 13,562 vehicles. Land Rover reported year-to-date sales of 10,053 a year ago. Consolidated June sales for the BMW Group totaled 17,121 units (BMW: 14,476; Land Rover: 2,645) and consolidated year-to-date sales increased 23 percent to 91,665 vehicles (BMW: 78,103; Land Rover 13,562).
