Volkswagen's June Sales Up 23 Percent - Best in 26 Years - Record Sales for Jetta
    AUBURN HILLS, Mich., July 1 -- Volkswagen of America, Inc.
reported record-breaking sales for the month of June, surpassing any June
total since 1973.
    Volkswagen sold 30,640 new cars in the U.S. last month, an increase of 23
percent over last June's 24,907.  It marks Volkswagen's best June in 26 years
and best month overall since May, 1979.
    For the year, Volkswagen has sold 150,495 new cars, an increase of 44.6
percent over the same period in 1998 when sales were 104,081.
    June also saw all-time record sales for its best-selling Jetta model,
which was totally redesigned for the 1999 model year.  Volkswagen sold 13,101
new Jettas in June, an increase of 23.9 percent over last year's figure of
10,577 and the best single month ever for this model, which first arrived to
the market in 1980.  The Jetta remains America's number-one selling European
nameplate.
    June marked continued strong sales for Volkswagen's popular and award-
winning Passat midsize sedan and wagon.  Passat sales for June were  6,314, up
124.6 percent from 1998 when they were 2,811.
    Volkswagen's New Beetle also enjoyed brisk sales in June with sales of
7,575, versus last June's figure of 7,466, an increase of 1.5 percent.
