Small Business Administration Presents TRW with First Perkins Award
RESTON, Va.--June 30, 1999--Inaugural award recognizes contract success with women-owned firms
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) presented TRW with one of the first Frances Perkins Vanguard Awards for its outstanding record in providing contracts to women-owned small businesses.
TRW Systems & Information Technology Group was one of four government and industry leaders honored nationwide. SBA Administrator Aida Alvarez, presented the award this month in Washington, D.C. to TRW representatives Pat Bishop, manager, and Al Boldon, director, of TRW's small business office. The award's namesake, Frances Perkins, served as President Franklin D. Roosevelt's secretary of labor from 1933 to 1945, the first woman to hold a cabinet-level post.
"We are proud and honored to be one of the honorees nationwide to receive this prestigious award from the SBA," said Phil Odeen, vice president and general manager, TRW Systems & Information Technology Group. "For the past 28 years, TRW has been involved in providing contracts to small/small disadvantaged and women-owned firms. We will continue to do business with firms that represent the diversity of the communities with which we work."
To be eligible, TRW achieved SBA "Award of Distinction" status in 1998. In 1999, the company awarded about 7 percent of its subcontracts to women-owned small businesses. This was almost 2 percent above SBA's award criterion of 5 percent and significantly higher than the industry average of 4.5 percent.
