IMCA Modifieds: LEBANON VALLEY RESULTS

27 June 1999

TREMONT HAMMERS 9TH WIN OF SEASON ON TREMONT LUMBER NIGHT

WEST LEBANON, NY- Kenny Tremont returned to victory lane after a week's
absence for his ninth win of the season. Hawley Smith was the winner of the
20-lap sportsman feature. Bob Duzlak won a great street stock feature and
George Catanzano won the 15-lap IMCA modified feature.

Rob Pitcher took command of the 30-lap modified feature on the
initial green flag. Russ Reckner had an early exit as he went to the pits on
lap three. Dickie Larkin would depart from the event just three laps later.
Kenny Tremont wasted little time getting through the field; he was up to
sixth by lap four. Tremont was challenging Jason Goff for third and would
take the spot away from him by lap eight. Tim Dwyer has made late race
charges something of a specialty this season. He looked to get things going a
little early in the race this week; he sat in the seventh position by lap
nine.

Pitcher had opened a huge lead by lap ten and he would start to get
into lapped traffic at this point in the race. John Hewitt raced with Steve
Devine for the third position on lap ten as well. Donnie Corellis cracked the
top five on lap eleven and took over fourth by the very next lap. Meanwhile
Tremont was up to second and chasing down the leader. Tremont caught Pitcher
by lap 15 and took over the lead on lap 16.

The first caution flag of the race came out on lap 16 as Steve Devine hit the
turn one fence. Rich Ricci Jr. was sent to the rear of the race for his role
in the incident. Eddie Marshall had to go to the pits on lap 19 with a left
rear flat tire. While Tremont had checked out on the lead there was some
great racing going on for second. Dwyer took over third on lap21 while
Corellis moved up to fourth on lap 25. These two driver put some heavy
pressure on the second place car of Pitcher.

The field would be bunched back up for a restart on lap 27. Pitcher, Dwyer
and Corellis went three wide for second with two laps remaining in the race.
Dwyer was able to take second but ran out of time to mount a challenge on
Tremont and he had to settle for second. Pitcher had a very strong run in
third with Corellis fourth and John Hewitt rounding out the top five. J.R.
Heffner had a strong run coming from the last starting spot to finish eighth.
The 20-lap sportsman feature had a lot of trouble getting started as the
caution flag flew on four occasions before lap six. The field was ordered to
go single file after the second lap five caution. Several of the top guns
were involved in these early accidents including George Marcus, Art Collins,
Chris Kokosa and K.C. Goewey. When the field finally settled down Hawley
Smith was in the lead with Mike Boomhower second and Lorne Browe third. Browe
took over second after a lap nine restart. Art Collins to get into the
feature through the consolation race. He worked his way all the way up to
third by the halfway point of the race. Danny Sanchez and Jason Tompkins had
a good side by side battle for the sixth position for two laps. Tompkins made
contact with the turn two wall on lap 14. He went spinning down the
backstretch making Marcus take evasive action for the second time tonight.
Kokosa had just gotten under Lee Gagliardi for fifth when Gagliardi blew up,
bringing out the final caution of the night. Marcus was able to get into the
top five by the end of the race. Smith held on for the remainder of the race
for his second win of the 1999 season. Collins was able to get to second by
the end of the race. Lorne Browe had his best run in the sportsman division
coming home third and Boomhower was fourth.

Bobby Blackburn led 19 laps of the 20-lap street stock feature, but
one of those was not the last lap. The street stocks struggled to get going
at the start of the feature as several multi-car pileups marred the start of
the event. Front-runners like Jim Lagenback, Scott Goversten and Butch Irwin
were all involved in these early accidents. There was some very good racing
at the front of the pack as the leaders ran nose to tail on lap five. Chris
Morris was trying to put himself into contention working his way up to fifth
by lap nine. Dave Kokindo saw a top five run end prematurely as he spun in
turn two on lap ten. That spin allowed Tom Brandt to move up into the top
five. Bob Duzlak took over the runner-up position from Robbie Speed on lap
12.

The caution flag flew on lap 14 allowing the field to get back in
line. Speed would drop from the race on the restart. Blackburn and Duzlak
were able to pull away from the field on the restart. Great racing for the
fifth spot as they went three wide on lap 16. Lagenback had worked his way
back, from his early race woes, to fifth by lap 16. A fantastic finish to a
very good race as the top three crossed the line side by side for a photo
finish. Duzlak was the winner with Blackburn finishes second and Lagenback
third. Blackburn was disqualified for being light during a post race
inspection.

George Catanzano took the lead at the start of the IMCA modified
feature and never looked back. Catanzano held the top spot for all 15-laps of
the race and was never seriously challenged. Two caution flags slowed the
pace of the event. Jim Rajczi and Paul LaRochelle came together in turn
three, with LaRochelle spinning out. Rajczi had to go pitside under the
caution with a right rear flat tire. Both were able to return to the event.
LaRochelle made his way all the way back up to sixth by the end of the race.
Catanzano saw a half-straightaway lead evaporate when Phil Balmer smacked the
turn two wall. Catanzano was able to pull away on the restart on took home
his first career victory. Anthony Markou was second, Jeff Carr third, Brian
Wilbur fourth and Steve Hough fifth.
