BMW Team PTG Mosport Update
24 June 1999
BMW Team PTG notes: test day, June 24 American Le Mans Series Grand Prix at Mosport (International Raceway) race three, American Le Mans Series BMW Team PTG participated in Thursday's track test day at Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ont. 1998 Mosport GT3 race-winner Mark Simo is co-driving the #6 BMW M3 coupe with Peter Cunningham. Road Atlanta GT race winners Brian Cunningham and Johannes van Overbeek are driving the #7 M3 four-door. And German Christian Menzel is competing in his first North-American race, partnered with Hans Stuck in the #10 four-door. Stuck's usual co-driver, Boris Said, is competing in a NASCAR Winston Cup race at Sears Point Raceway this weekend. Peter Cunningham, driver #6 BMW M3 "It's always fun to come to Mosport because it's such a challenging track with different kinds of corners, a lot of high-speed stuff and elevation changes. But right out of the box, the #6 M3 was very well-balanced. We know a couple of things we'd like to pursue, but we're pretty happy already." Johannes van Overbeek, driver #7 BMW M3 "The track was good. It took some time to get acclimated to it. It's a bit bumpy, but it's absolutely a drivers' track, a fantastic circuit. It's a combination of very fast corners and some corners where you have to get the car on the absolute edge to go fast. We were trying some tires that we unfortunately we won't be using, but the Yokohama/Level One/Flextronics International car ran perfect." Christian Menzel, driver, #10 BMW M3 "The team is very nice -- all the people are very nice to me and that is important. It gives me a good feeling. The track is fast, down and up and bumpy. It is not easy for me to learn a new car and this difficult circuit. It's a little bit too much at the moment, but we have two or three practices more, so it will be okay. Hans [Stuck] is the best helper for me at the moment. He has so much experience, it is fantastic!" Winning Ways BMW Team PTG M3s have collected 28 victories and 10 championships since 1995. The team won both the GT2 and GT3 classes during the 1998 Grand Prix at Mosport International Raceway. Mark Simo was co-driver on the winning GT3 team and Peter Cunningham drove the second-place GT3 BMW.
