Smith Wins Kentucky Four Axle Championship, Rookie of the Year Award; Overnite Now With a Dozen State Champions
    LOUISVILLE, Ky., June 21 -- Bowling Green City Driver Donnie
Smith won the Kentucky state truck driving championship in the four axle
classification here Saturday.  He also won the Rookie of the Year Award for
the highest point total of any first-time contestant, regardless of
classification.
    Smith now will compete in the National Truck Driving Championships in
Tampa, Fla., in August.
    His championship is the 12th state title and third Rookie of the Year
Award won by Overnite drivers this Spring.
    Also claiming awards for Overnite in Kentucky were Lexington Road Drivers
Danny Sparks and Mike Cyrus, who finished, respectively, second in the twin-
trailer and third in the three-axle competitions.
    In addition to the dozen champions and three Rookies of the Year, Overnite
drivers this Spring also have won two Pre-Trip Inspection Awards, 12 second
place awards and 11 third place awards.
    Overnite Transportation, a subsidiary of Union Pacific Corporation,
reported revenue in excess of $1 billion in 1998.  The less-than-truckload
carrier has 12,500 employees at more than 160 service centers serving 45,000
points in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico
and Guam.
