TEMIC Semiconductors Introduces Improved Versions of Industry Standard 80C51 Microcontrollers Featuring X2 Core Function

NANTES, France--June 16, 1999--TEMIC Semiconductors, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Atmel Corp. , announced today the availability of improved versions of its standard 80C51 devices, featuring unrivaled performance on the market.
The TEMIC Semiconductors' 8-bit microcontrollers based on the market-leading 80C51 core have been redesigned and are now manufactured in 0.5um technology. The enhanced core design enables a X2 feature, which doubles the internal clock speed allowing:

-- Higher computing performance, with devices running up to 60 MHz
equivalent frequency with a 30 MHz external crystal.

-- The use a lower frequency (:2) crystal, reducing crystal cost,
device consumption and lowering Electromagnetic Interference
(EMI) emission, while maintaining same throughput.

The extended range of standard devices includes the TS80C52X2 (8 Kbytes), the TS80C54X2 (16 Kbytes), TS80C58X2 (32 Kbytes). All are available in both mask ROM and OTP and offer a full compatibility between masked and OTP versions (unique mask set) lowering the qualification efforts that customer need to run when using various mask sets and versions.
Improved watchdog is also made available on TS80C54 and TS80C58, it provides 8 possible time-out (up to 2s at 12 MHz), thus saving the cost of external components to secure the application.
"80C51 devices are still very popular on the MCU market, and with our improved standard devices our customers will benefit from advanced technology and enhanced features to design highly competitive solutions" said Martina Knott, TEMIC Semiconductor's Product Line Manager for C51 Microcontrollers.
She added "furthermore the TS80C51Rx2 family offers additional design capability by adding on-chip PCA and XRAM to the X2 feature."
The new devices are backed by industry-standard software development tools, compilers, assemblers and simulators and programmers.
TS8xC5xX2 parts are available in speeds of 40 and 60MHz, with operating voltages of 3 and 5V available in both commercial and industrial temperature ranges. Package options include 40-pin PDIL, 44-pin PLCC, and 44-pin VQFP.
TEMIC Semiconductors designs, manufactures and markets on a worldwide basis technically advanced integrated circuits to serve communications, automotive, data processing and aerospace markets, using CMOS, BiCMOS, BCDMOS and SiGe technologies.
TEMIC Semiconductors operations include ISO-9001 certified Manufacturing facilities located in Heilbronn, Germany, Nantes, France, and Manila, Philippines.
Worldwide and local customers are supported by a network of company sales engineers as well as registered sales representatives and electronic component distributors.
