Sales Of SunPass(TM) Transponders Reach Milestone, Says The Florida Department Of Transportation
BOCA RATON, Fla., June 15 -- The Florida Department of
Transportation (FDOT) announces sales of transponders for the new SunPass(TM)
Electronic Toll Collection System have exceeded 30,000 to date. More than
1,000 transponders are being issued daily -- nearly tripling with the recent
expansion into Miami-Dade County. Beginning in South Florida, the SunPass
system is scheduled to roll out statewide in five stages by year-end 2000.
All turnpike facilities in Broward County are currently open. With the
SunPass system, tolls are electronically deducted from a prepaid toll account
as motorists pass through designated SunPass lanes without having to stop or
carry change.
"With projections of 100,000 transponders being sold in the first year, we
are very pleased to have reached the 30,000 milestone after seven short
weeks," said Deborah Stemle, FDOT director of toll operations.
To purchase a SunPass Electronic Toll Collection transponder, an
application can be completed and forwarded to the SunPass Customer Service
Center in Boca Raton or call toll-free at 1-888-TOLL-FLA. The center is open
Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. EST. Transponders ordered via the
telephone are shipped within 48 hours. Transponders cost $25 plus tax and
require a minimum opening balance of $25 -- with a 45-day money back guarantee
including refund on remaining balance. Motorists can obtain a SunPass
application from select toll plazas. SunPass applications are also available
for downloading from the Internet at http://www.SunPass.com . Additionally,
transponders can be purchased at participating South Florida NAPA Auto Parts
locations.
