Federal-Mogul Announces Automotive Cylinder Liner Joint Venture
    SOUTHFIELD, Mich., June 14 -- Federal-Mogul Corporation
and Teikoku Piston Ring Co., Ltd. today announced an agreement to
establish a joint venture for the manufacture of automotive cylinder liners.
The joint venture company will be called Federal-Mogul TP Liners, Inc., and
will manufacture at Federal-Mogul's current Lake City, Minnesota,
manufacturing facility. Federal-Mogul TP Liners, Inc., plans to invest over
$10 million in the operations over the next two years.
"Automotive companies worldwide are challenged to improve fuel economy and
reduce emissions," said Ray Quatrochi, director product technology, Powertrain
Systems. "Reductions in vehicle weight assist in meeting this challenge. The
conventional cast iron block engine is being replaced with aluminum block
designs with cast iron cylinder liners. Teikoku's automotive cylinder liner
technology provides a proven, robust solution in these applications."
The joint venture will supply thin-wall, low-cost, high performance
cylinder liners. "Our Lake City facility is recognized as a leading
manufacturer of heavy duty cylinder liners in North America, and Teikoku is
well established as a supplier of automotive liners in Japan," said Mike
Verwilst, vice president, Powertrain Systems - Americas. "This combination of
manufacturing expertise and product technology will serve the growing needs of
automotive engine manufacturers in North America very well."
Federal-Mogul and Teikoku Piston Ring currently have joint ventures in
China, India and the United Kingdom, as well as technology license agreements
in Germany, France, Turkey, Korea, the United Kingdom and the United States of
America. "We are pleased to have this opportunity to expand our relationship
with Teikoku Piston Ring," said Alan Johnson, executive vice president,
Powertrain Systems. "This joint venture will complement our existing piston
and piston ring business, and establish Federal-Mogul as a true 'power
cylinder' systems manufacturer in North America."
Teikoku Piston Ring Co., Ltd., a manufacturer of engine parts, including
piston rings and cylinder liners for use in automobiles, ships, construction
machinery, agricultural machinery and other industrial machinery, was founded
in 1939 and is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.
