Weiser Retires, Alapont Named President, Delphi EuropeTROY and FLINT, Mich., June 10 -- Jose Maria Alapont has been elected a Delphi vice-president and named president, Delphi Automotive Systems Europe, effective July 1, 1999. The announcement was made today by J.T. Battenberg III, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Delphi Automotive Systems. Alapont will replace Hans-Jurgen Weiser, who is retiring following an 18-year career with Delphi. "Hans has been a vital part of Delphi in helping to build a strong manufacturing footprint, excellent customer relationships and a strong technology strategy," said Battenberg. "He has supported significantly our efforts to grow our global customer base. We wish Hans well in his retirement and welcome Jose Maria into his new position. Jose Maria is bringing a tremendous international perspective and will play an integral role in growing our business with our European customers." With more than 20 years of international experience, Alapont joined Delphi as executive director, International Operations for Delphi Energy & Engine Management Systems in October 1997, in Bascharage, Luxembourg. Prior to this assignment, he was group vice-president and general manager for Valeo's Worldwide Lighting Systems. Alapont began his automotive career with Ford of Spain in 1975 as a machine and process capability engineer. He held various managerial, manufacturing, engineering, purchasing and operations assignments at Ford of Europe. In 1990, Alapont was named managing director of Valeo Engine Cooling- Spain. In 1991, he was named as their executive operations director for Worldwide Heavy Duty Engine Cooling and in 1992 he was named group vice president and general manager Worldwide Clutch Operations. A native of Spain, Alapont received an industrial engineering degree from the Technical School of Valencia, Spain, and holds a doctorate in philology from the University of Valencia, Spain. Delphi Automotive Systems also announced today that Jean de Montlaur will join the company as the executive director of international operations for Delphi Energy & Engine Management Systems and Delphi Chassis Systems, succeeding Jose Maria Alapont, who was named president of Delphi Europe. Montlaur will be based in Luxembourg and reports to Donald L. Runkle, president of Delphi Energy & Engine Management Systems. Montlaur most recently was general manager, Access Control Systems, a division of Meritor Automotive, based in Troy, Mich. Previously he was with Valeo as a corporate national director-France from 1995-1997, and from 1992- 1995 he was sales and marketing manager director for Valeo Security Systems. During his career he was also the general manager for international divisions and director of strategic development for Clemessy, a French automation supply company. He was also the North American marketing and program manager for Thomson-CSF, a major French electronics and defense company. From 1980-1988 he was with Jeumont-Schneider, an electric and electronics company, as a purchasing manager, area sales manager for North and South America, and a project manager.
