Detroit Diesel Supports Local School District Through VISION 2000DETROIT, June 10 -- Recognizing the critical need for excellence in technology and realizing that tomorrow's engineers and scientists are sitting in elementary classrooms today, Detroit Diesel Corporation has become a sponsor of the VISION 2000 program in partnership with the South Redford School District. VISION 2000 is a campaign of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Foundation designed to assure a skilled scientific and engineering work force for the year 2000 and beyond. Their objective is to prepare professionally developed classroom materials to assist teachers at all levels, kindergarten through grade 12. "A World In Motion" (AWIM) is the hands-on physical science curriculum supplement specifically developed for students in grades 4 - 6. Launched in 1991 as SAE's answer to the crisis in math/science education, AWIM continues to grow. Since the program's inception, almost one million students have participated. A unique feature of the program is the introduction of an engineer/scientist as a mentor and guide in the classroom. Recognized nationally for its innovative approach, AWIM excites younger students to math and science and with the aid of a volunteer, adds an element found in no other curriculum supplement. Under the direction of Timothy D. Leuliette, Vice Chairman of Detroit Diesel Corporation and President & Chief Operating Officer of Penske Corporation, Detroit Diesel Corporation has made a commitment of $100,000 to support VISION 2000. Additionally, 16 Detroit Diesel employees volunteer their time and effort to assist in the implementation of the VISION 2000 program within the South Redford School District. These volunteers include: Jim Adelsperger, Craig Allen, Jason Councilman, Kurt Couture, Dave Dronzkowski, Jeff Evans, Susan Flory, Jon Jackson, Chris Lemanski, Brian Lewallen, Mike Luckham, Stacey McCarthy, Shewana Skinner, Karen Slivovsky, Beth Stanko, and Brooke Younker. Detroit Diesel Corporation has successfully implemented and completed the first year of the SAE "A World In Motion" program in the South Redford Elementary Schools at the fourth grade level. Discussions to expand the program into the fifth and sixth grades are currently under review. Initial feedback, from both DDC volunteers as well as Redford teachers, has been extremely positive. The program proved to be a fun learning experience for both the students, as well as the teachers and DDC volunteers.
