AMA: Duhamel Injured in Racing Accident

9 June 1999

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Honda Racing Team rider and
AMA Champion road racer Miguel Duhamel was injured in a crash during
the Pro Honda 600 SuperSport race at Road Atlanta on June 6, 1999. His
motorcycle high-sided in turn six on the second lap of the race, and
suffered a fracture to his left femur.

On Sunday evening he was flown to Northern California for treatment by
noted sports physician Dr. Arthur Ting, who is also currently treating
five-time 500cc GP World Champion Mick Doohan for injuries he suffered
          at the 1999 Spanish GP.

Miguel will undergo surgery later this week to repair the fracture.
This is the same leg he broke last year at Loudon, NH in 1998, though
the current break is not to the previously injured area. Miguel$B!G(Bs
left femur bone contains a rod, and the new fracture took place at the
top end of this rod. This type of injury is described as a shear
fracture by the medical staff, a fracture that occurs in a pinned bone
          where the pin ends.

This week$B!G(Bs surgery will repair the break, and doctors will insert a
new, longer rod in Miguel$B!G(Bs leg. Although any femur fracture is a
serious injury, this current fracture is less complicated than the
previous leg injury he suffered at Loudon, and Miguel's rehabilitation
is expected to be much quicker.

Reached by telephone on Monday, Miguel was his usual charismatic-self.
Already planning his post-surgery rehabilitation, Duhamel cracked the
occasional joke, and regretted not being able to run the second
Superbike event at Atlanta. "The RC45 was really working well on
Sunday," said Miguel, who finished Saturday$B!G(Bs Superbike race in fifth
position. "I think we had a shot at the podium in Sunday$B!G(Bs race."
