A Rising Starr in Nascar Craftsman Truck Series
8 June 1999
DALLAS READY FOR A NEW STARR Ft. Worth, Texas (June 7, 1999) - When the 1999 NASCAR Craftsman Truck schedule was released last year, David Starr eagerly scanned it for the date at Texas Motor Speedway. He committed the June 11 date to memory and counts this as one of the biggest weekends of the season for him and the No. 73 Sonntag Redi-Mix Concrete team. "I was born in Houston and live in Forth Worth so Texas is in my blood. Our team is based out of Little Elm, a small city just outside Dallas, and most of the crew has Texan roots. We'll have plenty of family and friends in the stands. Maybe I'll even get more cheers at the driver's intros than Ron Hornaday," Starr quipped. "It's safe to say that we have a lot riding on this event and we would love to have our best race of the season right here at home." He has one start at Texas Motor Speedway and finished 18th, still the career-best finish of his 13 starts in the NCTS. Last season Starr also led for one lap, the only time he has led the Truck Series. Starr, however, has run more laps around 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway than his statistics show. He is a driving instructor with the Team Texas High Performance Driving School, which is based at the track, and frequently takes to the wheel to show students the proper line around the course. Starr has been busy promoting the PRONTO AUTO PARTS 400 for several weeks and the Dallas media has taken a shine to their hometown hero. At the end of May he joined Hornaday in taking local journalists on hot laps around the track in a custom designed, two-seat Chevrolet Silverado race truck. He has also made the rounds of area radio stations and has two more interviews scheduled. On Wednesday, June 9, Starr will be calling the Tulsa-based Sports Talk station 1430-AM. He will be on the air for approximately 20 minutes starting at 2:15 p.m. CST. And for those in Dallas for the race, Starr will be conducting a live radio interview on Friday, June 11 around 6:45 am CST. This will be broadcast on KZPS 92.5-FM and should last 10 to 20 minutes. Please note that times may change without notice. "This is going to be a fun weekend," Starr said, "But we need to maintain our focus. There will be a lot of distractions for both me and the crew so it will be important to remember that this is just another race on the schedule. We need to keep doing the same things we have been doing all season long, but that could be hard with all our friends and family members coming over to visit and wish us good luck." The PRONTO AUTO PARTS 400 is the tenth race of the season and will be broadcast live on espn2 and MRN radio on Friday, June 11 at 7:30 p.m. EST. Qualifying takes place a day earlier. This will be the second time that the NCTS will run an event in conjunction with the Indy Racing league. Starr currently stands 23rd in the overall points standings and third in the USG SHEETROCK Brand Rookie-of-the-Year standings. He also races a limited Winston West schedule in the #35 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. David Starr Career Statistics Texas Motor Speedway (Ft.
