CASCAR Castrol Super Series - Weekend Wrap

CASCAR Castrol Super Series Weekend Wrap Circuit Ste Croix & Bridge City Speedway STE. CROIX, QC - This past weekend, the CASCAR Castrol Super Series made the first of its two summer visits to the province of Quebec for the AutoPLACE 200 at the Circuit Ste. Croix, near Quebec City. After leading the most laps in the season opener at Delaware Speedway Park on May 23, Chevrolet Monte Carlo driver Peter Gibbons managed to 'close the deal' by winning the Ste. Croix race in dominant fashion. Driving his Cdn. Tire / Slick 50-backed car, the Stouffville, ON racer lined up fourth in the field of 29 starters for the 200 lap affair and quickly powered to the front. He took the lead from polesitter and early race leader Pete Vanderwyst, on lap 37, and never looked back. Several cautions slowed the race, but each time, Gibbons was able to re-establish a comfortable lead and made the win look relatively easy. "The car was excellent tonight. The big thing was to not burn off the tires and we were able to do that," said Gibbons, after the race. "Actually, we didn't have to work too hard. I was able to let up halfway down the front straight. She was just handling that well." Castrol Canada Dodge racer DJ Kennington recovered from an off-track excursion on lap 1, which sent him to the back of the pack, to take second at the finish. The St. Thomas, ON driver progressed steadily through the field after the incident and was elated at his runner-up showing. "We got off to a rough start, so we're happy to have come back like we did. It was a hard run." Neil Fair, the winner of the Delaware Speedway CASCAR race two weeks earlier, took third at Ste. Croix, to complete the podium finishers. The Skoal Inc. Chevy pilot started 13th in the AutoPLACE 200 and ran outside of the top 6 for much of the race. Misfortune struck points leader Don Thomson Jr. and Rob Neely in the late going, moving Fair up in the final results. Thompson was able to hang on for eighth, however, which was enough to retain the points lead he's enjoyed since his win at Peterborough. POINT STANDINGS: (As of June 5, 1999 / After 3 events): 1. Don Thomson Jr. (498 / Chevrolet) 2. Peter Gibbons (488 / Chevrolet) 3. Neil Fair (484 / Chevrolet) 4. DJ Kennington (442 / Dodge) 5. Pete Vanderwyst (440 / Chevrolet) 6. Andy Farr (380 / Dodge) SASKATOON, SK - Saskatoon's Bridge City Speedway played host to the Auto Clearing Chrysler Superstore 150 on Saturday evening. Edmonton racer Kevin Dowler spoiled hometown racer Dan Shirley's night by taking the checkered flag in the 150 lap race. Dowler's Ford Quality Care Taurus was the class of the field most of the night. He set the fastest lap times during both qualifying and the race. An inversion of the top-five time trialers saw last year's Edmonton National event winner line up fifth in the field of 25 who started the race. It took just 51 laps for Dowler to run down race leader Steve Jefferson and assume the point. He wouldn't be led again, although the competition remained furious to the end. At the finish, Dowler was just .263 seconds ahead of runner-up Dan Shirley. In fact, the top five finishers were separated by less than 1.5 seconds. Although obviously not content to finish second in the lone Saskatoon race of the season, Shirley can be contented with holding onto his CASCAR Castrol Super Series West points lead, after two events. Prince George, BC's Steve Jefferson completed the podium finishers in Saskatoon. Driving the Mopar Batteries Dodge, Jefferson started and finished third for a balanced Ford / Chevy / Dodge top three. Jefferson's result was good enough to retain second in the Western point standings. POINT STANDINGS: (As of June 5, 1999 / After 2 event): 1. Dan Shirley (376 / Chevrolet) 2. Steve Jefferson (338 / Dodge) 3. Kevin Dowler (334 / Ford) 4. Wade Lee (328 / Chevrolet) 5. Carl Harr (312 / Chevrolet) 6. Daryl Harr (300 / Chevrolet) 7. Fred DelPero (296 / Ford) 8. Kim Richard (294 / Chevrolet) 9. Don Sales (284 / Chevrolet) 10. Mike Browne (280 / Pontiac) 11. Charlie Kirton (276 / Chevrolet) 12. Ron Larson (270 / Chevrolet) 13. Todd Nichol (266 / Chevrolet) 14. Darren Swerid (248 / Pontiac) 15. John Restemeyer (224 / Chevrolet) Race Notes: CASCAR Notes: The win by Peter Gibbons made it three in a row for the Chevrolet Monte Carlo drivers in the season's first three Eastern outings... Saskatoon race winner Kevin Dowler has a new 'lucky charm' in the form of Ford of Canada's Craig Chisamore. One of the automaker's most prominent racing enthusiasts, Chisamore attended the race at Bridge City Speedway on Saturday night. With Dowler winning the event, Chisamore may have to make a habit of attending more Western CASCAR races...
