Gibbons takes CASCAR race at Ste. Croix
6 June 1999
CASCAR Castrol Super Series East STE. CROIX, ON - The CASCAR Castrol Super Series took to the track at Circuit Ste. Croix, near Quebec City, QC for the AutoPLACE 200 on Saturday night. Chevrolet Monte Carlo driver Peter Gibbons dominated the majority of the race and cruised to his first checkered flag of the season. The Stouffville, ON racer took the lead from polesitter Pete Vanderwyst on lap 40 and was never seriously challenged again on the 5/8-mile oval. Second place went to Castrol Dodge driver DJ Kennington. He started on the outside pole but was sent off the track and into the grass on the first lap, following contact with another racer. He had to fight his way back through the pack to take a well-deserved second. The final podium position went to Neil Fair of Ancaster, ON. The Skoal Inc. Chevy driver finished the race "on fumes" and was worried he would run out of gas before lap 200. Several cautions slowed the pace of the AutoPLACE 200. The CASCAR Castrol Super Series takes next weekend off before returning to Quebec the following Saturday (June 19) for the annual event at Montreal's Autodrome St-Eustache.
