Mr. Saturday Night (Tremont) Wins at Lebanon, Kokosa Sportsman Victor

6 June 1999

WEST LEBANON, NY- Kenny Tremont won the 30-lap modified feature Saturday
night at Lebanon Valley. Chris Kokosa was able to end a string of bad luck by
winning the 20-lap sportsman feature. Jim Lagenback won the street stock
feature and Jim Rajczi was the winner of the 15-lap IMCA modified main.
Husqvarna and Wohrles Meat Market were the main sponsors' of the evening.
Ron Blake and Russ Blair led the modifieds down for the start of the
30-lap feature. Blair was able to take the advantage and led the race until
lap eight. Kenny Tremont was charging through the pack early, racing with
Steve Devine for ninth on lap three. Rich Ricci Jr. was also looking strong;
he took over the second position on lap five. Tremont was up to sixth by lap
five. John Hewitt was looking to add to his string of top five performances
this season; he was in seventh on lap six.
Rich Ricci was just beginning to challenge Blair for the lead on lap
seven when his brother, Mike Ricci, brought out the caution flag. Rich Ricci
was able to take the lead on the restart. Dave Leckonby, Todd Wilkinson and
Rob Pitcher all came together in turn one, bringing out the caution flag on
lap nine. The restart saw a great three wide battle for the third position
down the frontstretch between Eddie Marshall, Tremont and Blair. Tremont was
able to gain the advantage and moved up to second by lap eleven. A little
further back in the field, Donnie Corellis and Mike Benson were racing for
the seventh spot.
Ricci saw his lead begin to dwindle by the halfway point of the race.
Tremont caught Ricci and made the pass for the lead on lap 16. Hewitt was
able to crack the top five on lap 17 and would eventually take over fourth by
the end of the race. The only thing that was able to slow Tremont down in the
final stages of the race was lapped traffic. Tremont was able to get through
the traffic and take home his seventh victory on the 1999 season at Lebanon
Valley. Tremont has not lost a feature event run on a Saturday night at
Lebanon Valley in 1999. Ricci finished in the runner-up position and Blair
had a great run in third. Hewitt was fourth and Marshall was fifth. Tim Dwyer
came home sixth with Benson seventh, Corellis eighth, Jody Tornabene ninth
and Dickie Larkin rounded out the top ten.
Tom Overbaugh led the first three laps on the sportsman feature.
Chris Kokosa made the pass for the lead on lap three with Wayne Jelley moving
up to second. K.C. Goewey made a bold move on lap seven going from seventh to
fourth. The top five at halfway were Kokosa, Jelley, Goewey, Sparky Lowe and
Jay Casey fifth.
Kokosa was able to open a half-straightaway lead by lap 13. Goewey
began to challenge Jelley for second on lap 15; a caution flag on lap 16
slowed his bid as Jason Tompkins spun in turn one. Art Collins looked to take
over fifth over on lap 18. Goewey and Jelley raced hard for the second spot
on the final lap. The two made contact coming off turn four on the final lap
with Goewey taking second at the stripe. Kokosa was able to end a rash a bad
luck and take his first win of the 1999 season. Goewey was second, Jelley
third, Lowe fourth and Collins fifth.
Chris Morris got to lead the first lap of the 20-lap street stock
feature. The caution flag flew on the very first lap as Robbie Speed and
Henry Tanner made contact on the frontstretch. Tanner hit the wall as a
result and had to be towed into the pit area. The restart saw Danny Sanchez
get under Morris for the lead and the two came together. Both continued
without harm, but Jim Lagenback was able to grab the top spot as a result.
Butch Irwin, Scott Govertsen and Sanchez went three wide for second on a lap
six restart, with Sanchez able to take second.
Robbie Speed was running in the top five when he spun in turn four on
lap seven. Speed was able to continue, although he had to rejoin the race at
the rear of the field. Scott Govertsen used the restart to take over the
second running position. Ray Hall lost his left rear wheel on the
frontstretch bringing out the caution flag on lap eight. Butch Irwin grabbed
second from Govertsen on the restart. Bobby Duzlak began to challenge Irwin
for fourth and took the spot on lap nine. Duzlak had a strong car as he took
over second by lap 13.
Lagenback was able to open a comfortable lead after every restart.
Govertsen would see a top five run come to a sudden end as he hit he turn
four wall on lap 16. Dave Kokindo had ducked into the pits on lap one but was
able to return. By lap 18 he had worked his way all the way back up to third
and was looking for second. He tried several times to duck beneath Duzlak,
but could never make the pass stick. Kokindo had to settle for the third
place finish. Lagenback was able to hold on for his third win of the 1999
season. Irwin was second and, as previously mentioned Kokindo third. Speed
recovered from early race problems to finish fourth and Duzlak rounded out
the top five.
Bill Lander led the IMCA modified feature until Jim Rajczi took it
from him on lap six. The race was slowed three times for incidents on the
track. Brian Wilbur spun on lap nine while running in the top ten. Steve
Hough made heavy contact with the turn one wall on lap 14, setting up a last
lap restart. No one could touch Rajczi one the point as he took his second
win of the season.
