GORDON ACES SWAYNE FOR POLE POSITION

        WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah - Completing two rounds of qualifying
Saturday morning Paso Robles, Calif.'s Doug Gordon muscled his way past
early leader Pete Swayne and late challenger Steve Gasparrelli to claim the
$1,000 Winston Top Qualifier bonus in Federal-Mogul Funny Car.
        Qualifying for the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event at
Rocky Mountain Raceways, Gordon claimed the No. 1 spot with a 5.924-second
lap in the final time-trial session, just getting by Orange, Calif.'s
Swayne who recorded a 5.930-second run Friday.  Gasparrelli, of West
Covina, Calif., settled for third place on the starting grid with a
5.949-second run.
        Defending national and event champion Rick Santos of San Leandro,
Calif., solidified his hold on the No. 1 starting spot and the $1,000
Winston Top Qualifier award with a 5.577-second run, breaking his day-old
track record of 5.65 seconds.  Littleton, Colo.'s Melanie Troxel upped her
own track speed record to 254.38 mph, but will start in third position,
behind Laguna Hills, Calif.'s Darren Nicholson.
        First round of eliminations in Federal-Mogul Dragster and Funny Car
are scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, with eliminations in all
other categories slated to conclude Sunday.

Division Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series.
