Guide Names Murray Executive Vice President
ANDERSON, Ind., June 3 -- Steven L. Murray has been appointed
executive vice president of human resources at Guide Corporation of Anderson,
Ind. His appointment is effective immediately. Murray will be the company's
chief negotiator in upcoming contract talks with the United Auto Workers
(UAW).
Murray has been president of the company's Forward Lighting Division in
Monroe, La. since November of 1998, and was with General Motors for 30 years
before Guide was formed last fall.
He will replace Ed Burke, vice president of industrial relations, in
contract talks with the UAW, and will assume overall responsibilities for all
of Guide's human resources and labor relations activities.
Burke came out of retirement earlier this year, but recently reconsidered
and asked to be relieved of current responsibilities. He will, however,
remain available to Murray during this year's contract talks.
Dennis Stachelski, a retired Ford Motor Company human resources executive
who agreed last fall to work with Guide through the conclusion of this year's
labor negotiations, will continue in that capacity, assisting Murray.
In announcing Murray's appointment, Guide Chairman and CEO Mike Hammes
said it was important to establish continuity in the human resources and labor
relations areas as the company enters its first contract talks with the UAW as
a free-standing corporation.
"We expect these first negotiations to begin the establishment of a
healthy, long-term relationship with the union," Hammes said. "Ed Burke has
already set that process in motion, and we are grateful for his past
contributions as well as his willingness to give us his counsel in the months
ahead.
"Steve Murray is uniquely qualified to lead this effort not only because
of his prior labor relations experience, but especially because of his stints
as plant manager of our Monroe, Louisiana plant and head of the Forward
Lighting Division."
Murray, 48, began his career in 1968 as a General Motors Institute student
supervisor at a former GM plant in Columbus, Ohio, and held a number of
manufacturing and industrial relations positions with GM in the United States
and Europe, including serving as director of labor relations for GM's Inland
Fisher Guide Division, before becoming manager of the Louisiana plant in 1993.
In addition to a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from GMI (now
Kettering University), Murray has an advanced management degree from
Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pa.
He and his wife, Diana, are the parents of two sons, Zack and Joel.
Guide Corporation is one the world's largest manufacturers of automotive
lighting products. The company was formed in November 1998 when General
Motors transitioned its Delphi Lighting Operations. Headquartered in
Anderson, Ind., Guide Corporation has more than 3,000 employees worldwide. It
operates the Signal Lighting Division in Anderson, the Forward Lighting
Division in Monroe, La., and an additional manufacturing facility in
Matamoros, Mexico. Guide also has a joint venture operation with Sung San in
Taegu, South Korea.
