Bethlehem Steel Celebrates Fourth Consecutive General Motors Supplier Award
BETHLEHEM, Pa., June 2 -- Bethlehem Steel Corporation
celebrated the distinction of being named "Supplier of the Year" by
its largest steel customer, General Motors Corporation, for the fourth
consecutive year amid a gathering of corporate executives, community leaders,
government representatives, guests and employees. Bethlehem is the only steel
supplier in the world to be so honored by the world's largest manufacturing
corporation.
Curtis H. "Hank" Barnette, Bethlehem's chairman and chief executive
officer, told the gathering:
"This unprecedented fourth GM Supplier of the Year Award indicates a
partnership between Bethlehem Steel and General Motors that is `Like A Rock'
and I would proudly add `as strong as steel.' Indeed it represents a
partnership for the next millennium. Receiving the General Motors award gives
all of us on the Bethlehem Team the satisfaction that comes from knowing that
our performance has served the needs of one of our most valued customers.
Increasing the value of our company for our stockholders is our overall
objective, and the primary way we will accomplish this is by serving our
customers. Their success is our success."
One of the key GM executives in attendance at the awards ceremony was John
Stiles, executive director, Worldwide Purchasing, Metallic. Mr. Stiles
underscored the close working relationship between Bethlehem Steel and GM,
saying, "Bethlehem Steel Corporation has established itself as a premier
supplier to GM. And the 1998 Supplier of the Year Award recognizes Bethlehem
as one of the `best of the best' for its continuing outstanding service to
General Motors."
A large contingent of Lehigh Valley area General Motors dealers was in
attendance at today's ceremony at Bethlehem's Martin Tower headquarters
complex and various GM model cars made with Bethlehem Steel components were on
display in the Tower concourse and in the building's main parking lot. The
event was highlighted by music provided by the Liberty High School Grenadier
Bagpipers, and a picnic-style lunch was served on the Martin Tower lawn.
GM has been presenting its supplier of the year award since 1992. This
year, of GM's 30,000 worldwide suppliers, Bethlehem Steel was one of only
184 to be selected for the supplier recognition, which is accorded only to
those suppliers who have achieved world-class levels of quality, service,
technology and price in support of GM.
Mr. Barnette paid special tribute to Bethlehem's employees and the role
they played in achieving the GM recognition. "It takes total focus, rock
solid determination and dedication on the part of all our employees," he said,
noting that similar celebrations are going to take place tomorrow (June 3) at
Bethlehem's Galvanized Products Division in Lackawanna, N.Y., and at the Burns
Harbor Division in Indiana, which produce the high quality sheet steel that is
provided to General Motors.
Mr. Barnette emphasized that: "This is an award for the entire Bethlehem
Team. Everyone, including our own suppliers, shares in this award, from those
Bethlehem employees who produce the raw materials, to those who ship the
finished coils of steel, as well as those in research, commercial, customer
service, purchasing and transportation."
The Bethlehem chairman underscored the fact that General Motors's vision
is to be the World's Leader in Transportation and Related Services, while
Bethlehem Steel's vision is to Be the Premier Steel Company.
