1997 REVIEW
Taking charge from the pole position two-time former series champion Mike
Cope led the first 69 laps of the 200-lap Pep Boys 200. Cope handed the
lead to Ron Young on lap 70 when he chose to pit, then Carl Long took the
point on lap 103, under similar circumstances. Cope regained the lead on
lap 112 and appeared to be headed towards victory. On lap 151 Cope ran into
the back of a lapped car and had to head to the pits for body damage
repairs. This again handed the lead to Long, who had not pitted, and the
rookie managed to stay out front for the victory despite not pitting for
fuel or tires. Scot Walters, Young, Jeff Fultz and Bobby Gill rounded out
the top five. Cope managed to stay on the lead lap and finished ninth.

RECORDS
Qual. Record: Dick Anderson, Wildwood, Fla., Dodge, 15.532 secs., 123.539

Motor Speedway. Immediately following the zMAX 100, Barfield and Crawford

· The zMAX 100 is the second of five races to be held over five consecutive
