Raimund Baumschlager Volkswagen Motorsport¹s new British Championship signing, Raimund Baumschlager, has a long and successful association with Volkswagen and the Golf GTI. The 39-year-old Austrian started out in the sport in 1984, winning his first major event - the Steiermark Rally in his native Austria - two years later at the wheel of an Opel Manta 400. In 1987/¹88 he contested the Austrian Championship in a Toyota Corolla, switching to Volkswagen for 90. He drove a Golf GTI to fifth place on the 1990 Tour de Corse. Three years running (90/¹91/¹92) he claimed runner-up spot in the Austrian Championship, winning it outright in 1993. After a spell as a test driver with Ford, Raimund returned to the Volkswagen fold in 1996, contesting several rounds of the Austrian and Czech Rally Championships. He won the Austrian Phyrn-Eisenwurzen event and was second on the Krumlov Rally in the Czech Republic. He contested the 1996 RAC Rally for Volkswagen, claiming 10th place overall, and sixth in class, on what was competition debut for the Mk III kit car¹. In 1998 he drove his Volkswagen to a creditable sixth overall on the gruelling Safari Rally in Africa, and was fourth overall on the Ulster Rally, his British Championship debut. Raimund is also an accomplished endurance race driver, having claimed diesel class victories with the Golf TDI in the 1996 Nurburgring and Spa 24-Hour classics. In 1997 he claimed pole position for the Vallelunga Six-Hour race in Italy and led the race before retirement. He has played a major part in the testing & development programme of the Peugeot 106 Maxi during 1998 and early 1999, and took the car to a comfortable class win in the opening round of the Peugeot Sport BTRDA Gold Star Series, the Wyedean Rally. For the 1998 British Championship, Peugeot introduced the stunning Peugeot 106 Maxi to the UK, to contest the new "Super 1600" category. The team had a year of mixed fortunes as the car was continually developed to suit the British forests. Justin demonstrated the car¹s potential with a category win and a career-best of 8th overall on the Ulster International rally. In 1997, Justin contested all rounds of the British Rally Championship with Peugeot, driving a Peugeot 306 S16. A consistent year saw him end the year as first non-kit car in the championship, and 7th overall in the Driver¹s Championship. In 1996, Justin - together with new co-driver Andrew Bargery - secured the title of British Junior Rally Champion. He won four of the six rounds, winning outright the Peugeot Challenge along the way. Justin also finished 3rd overall in the 1996 British Rally Championship - the first Amateur Driver - and collected the Gunk Reliability award for his 100% finishing record. Justin completed the year with his first "works" drive, joining Peugeot for the RAC Rally. In 1992, Justin starting contesting the Peugeot Rally Challenge in a Peugeot 205 1.9 GTi. He was runner up in both the 1993 and 1994 series, before switching to the new Peugeot 306 S16 for the 1995 season. Gwyndaf Evans Age: 39 (40 by time of rally!) Running in 5th position when mechanical failure forced retirement. 1984 Motoring News/BTRDA Road Rally Champion 1983 1st overall Cambrian News Trophy Rally Mark Higgins Though still only 28, Mark Higgins has packed a huge amount of success into his brief rallying career - not least his crowning in 1997 as British Rally Champion. But given that he was born on the Isle of Man, speed centre of the British Isles, and a long Higgins family tradition in motor sport, it¹s perhaps little wonder that Mark should have sped to stardom. His first victories came at the wheel of a kart at 16, but it wasn¹t long before the lure of rallying proved too great. In fact, Mark¹s 1999 switch to the Volkswagen Motorsport team represents something of a homecoming for him, for it was at the wheel of a Golf GTI that he claimed his first notable rally results. With his mother, Christina, in the co-driver¹s seat, Higgins took the Manx rallies by storm in the late 80s and early 90s. A series of class wins in the British Championship followed during 1991, 92 and 93, and then Mark won the British Junior Championship title in 1994 with a clean sweep of class victories on all five rounds of the UK series. These impressive results led to a contract with the Nissan team, for whom he won the British Championship drivers¹ crown in 1997 after finishing as runner-up the previous season. Notable successes during 96 and 97 included an outright Ulster Rally win and second in F2 on the RAC Rally. In 1998 Higgins contested several World Championship rounds with Nissan, scoring a third-place finish in the 2-litre World Cup in Finland and fourth in F2 on the Sanremo Rally. Neil Simpson Few drivers have enjoyed as rapid a start to their rallying career as Neil Simpson - his first competitive event came just a fortnight after he passed his driving test on his 17th birthday. That club event, contested in a Talbot Sunbeam prepared in the workshops of the family garage business, proved his prowess at the wheel and, after success in a number of local rallies, he decided to have a serious crack at the sport with a self-prepared Peugeot 309. In 1991 he drove the Peugeot to second place in class in the EARS/Motoring News National Tarmac Championship, and then stepped up to the Peugeot Challenge for 1992 and 93. At the wheel of a new Peugeot 205 and now partnered by Steve Martin, Simpson achieved excellent results in 1994 and clinched a Shell Scholarship, propelling him into the British Championship for 95 in a Nissan Sunny. For 1996 Neil switched to a Boland Motorsport-prepared Ford Escort and was third among the British Championship runners on the Pirelli International, took second in Ulster and was destined for a top-three championship placing had his strong run in second position on the Manx not ended with engine failure. 1997 was all set to be Simpson¹s season, but a sponsorship hitch left him on the sidelines until Volkswagen offered him a drive on the British Championship-closing Manx International. Neil rewarded the faith placed in him with a strong drive to fifth place, helping to clinch the manufacturers¹ title for the team. In 1998 Simpson and Martin made history as the crew of the first works-supported diesel-engined rally car to compete in Britain. Their Greenergy-backed Volkswagen Golf TDI took the Mintex National Rally Championship by storm. Highlight of the year was the duo¹s astonishing fifth overall placing on the Manx National Rally, some seven minutes in front of their nearest two-wheel-drive rival. Gang Warily Part of the pleasure of spectating on the RSAC Scottish Rally is that it takes part in some of the more remote areas of the country. Many of the roads are not designed for heavy traffic. Therefore, the rally organisers appeal to spectators to heed the Royal Scottish Automobile Club¹s own motto "Gang Warily". Drive with care and consideration Park sensibly Respect speed limits. "Most people realise that the special stages are the only place for fast driving", comments RSAC Scottish Rally Clerk of the Course Jonathan Lord. "Unfortunately, there are some who forget. I would ask spectators and participants to remember that the good name of rallying in Scotland is in their hands." In the stages: Stand well back from the action. Watch for the danger of flying stones from car wheels. Don¹t stand on the outside of corners. Don¹t walk on the track after the stage has opened. Don¹t take dogs into a special stage not even on a lead. Don¹t take prams or pushchairs into stages. Supervise children closely they may not understand the dangers. Never stand on, or near, piles of logs. Smoking is strictly prohibited on all forest stages (even in damp conditions the fire danger is critical at this time of year). Spectators are also asked to follow the country code and to dispose of litter properly. Previous winners The first RSAC Scottish Rally was held in 1932 and, thereafter, annually until the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. It was revived in 1951 and with the exceptions of 1957, 1960 and 1974 it has run each year since. This year¹s event in the RSAC's centenary year is, therefore, the 54th RSAC Scottish Rally.
