Utah Company Bolsters Efforts to Help Reduce Automobile Crash Fatalities Flexpoint Inc. Urges Drivers to Remember Air Bag SafetySALT LAKE CITY, May 26 -- This week automobile drivers across the country are participating in Operation ABC Mobilization: America Buckles Up Children -- the largest ever coordinated stepped-up effort on drivers who don't restrain children with seatbelts. Flexpoint Inc., an operating subsidiary of Micropoint (OTC Bulletin Board: MICP) and a sensoring technology company, would like those same drivers to consider another issue that is just as important -- air bag safety. Automobile accidents are the leading cause of death for persons from six to 27 years old. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), air bags have saved the lives of 3,444 people -- 2,483 of those people were not wearing seat belts. "At one time or another we have all forgotten there is an air bag on the passenger side and placed our children in the front seat instead of the backseat where it is safer," said Doug Odom, president and chief executive officer of Flexpoint Inc. "We created the Bend Sensor(R) Occupant Detection System to de-activate the air bag by using a system of both weight and presence sensors. This system can tell the difference between a safety seat, a child or an adult. This level of accuracy allows us to develop smart air bags that can selectively deploy and help save lives." The combination of seat belts and air bags will never prevent all fatalities; some accidents are just too severe, Odom added. However, Bend Sensor technology is designed to eliminate passenger air bag deployment when a person under the system's specified weight or an inanimate object is present. The Bend Sensor Occupant Detection System is the backbone of an industry-defining smart air bag system that is capable of selectively deploying passenger-side air bags. In 1999, Flexpoint signed an agreement with Delphi Automotive Systems to supply the Bend Sensor Occupant Detection System to General Motors for incorporation in automobiles beginning in 2000.
