Johnson Controls Awards Educational Fellowships To Executives from Minority-owned BusinessesFour Senior Executives from Minority Businesses To Attend Leadership Program at Dartmouth College PLYMOUTH, Mich., May 26 -- For the second consecutive year, Johnson Controls has awarded company-sponsored fellowships to senior executives from four minority-owned businesses in Michigan. The group will attend the Minority Business Executive Program (MBEP) -- a five-day intensive management course presented by the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College, in Hanover, New Hampshire. The recipients were named last night at the 18th Annual Michigan Minority Procurement Conference reception, which was held at Cobo Center, in Detroit, Michigan. The fellowships are part of minority business development efforts at Johnson Controls -- a leading global supplier of automotive interior systems. Three fellowships went to leaders of organizations previously named "Minority Suppliers of the Year" by the Michigan Minority Business Development Council (MMBDC). They are: Edward Ruth, president of E.R. Tool Company in Warren, Michigan; Sid Taylor, chairman and chief executive officer of SBF Automotive in Detroit, Michigan; and Chain Sandhu, president of NYX, Inc. in Livonia, Michigan. The MMBDC named Minority Suppliers of the Year in three categories based on overall sales volume at its 1998 awards dinner. The MMBDC is a Michigan-based, non-profit organization that supports minority businesses. With more than 1,300 members, the group works to create linkages between major corporations and minority businesses. Johnson Controls awards the fourth fellowship to a top executive at one of its minority-owned suppliers. This year's recipient is E. Don Cunningham, president of Universal Trim, Inc. in Madison Heights, Michigan. Universal Trim was selected for its outstanding performance during the past year as a key supplier to Johnson Controls. John Barth, president and chief operating officer for Johnson Controls, said the company is strongly committed to supporting minority-owned companies and the MMBDC. He serves as the group's vice chairman. "These fellowships provide outstanding, personal development opportunities for minority executives," said Barth. "They're part of our efforts to provide leadership support and skill-building for people who manage top minority companies." As a sponsor of the fellowship, Johnson Controls underwrites the MBEP program registration costs, tuition, course materials, and related expenses. The Dartmouth College program is designed for presidents and senior managers of minority-owned businesses. The five-day curriculum is designed to help executives become dynamic leaders and strengthen their management skills. Program enrollment is limited to 50 executives selected from the most promising minority-owned companies in the nation. The Plymouth, Michigan-based automotive business of Johnson Controls -- which employs more than 57,000 people at 275 facilities worldwide -- achieved US$9.3 billion in sales for the 1998 fiscal year. In model-year 1999, it will supply interior products for more than 22 million vehicles. Johnson Controls, Inc. is a global market leader in automotive systems and facility management and control.
