Finalists Selected for Land Rover TReK `99

25 May 1999

Finalists Selected for Land Rover TReK `99
LANHAM, Md., May 25 -- Land Rover North America today
announced the six teams that qualified as finalists for TReK '99, its inter-
retailer competition modeled after the Camel Trophy Adventure. Forty-eight
Land Rover retailers -- the maximum number the organizers could accommodate --
competed in the regional competitions, which were held on a 600-acre ranch
outside of Bodega Bay, California, and concluded in the final round this past
weekend. Of the 48 participating teams, six teams were victorious and will
return to the ranch to compete in the TReK Finals, which will be held on
Thursday, May 27, 1999.
The six finalists: Land Rover Denver East; Chicago-area Land Rover Lake
Bluff; Land Rover North Point, from Alpharetta, GA, just north of Atlanta;
Land Rover Richmond of British Columbia, Canada; Pioneer Centres of San Diego;
and The Automaster, a Land Rover retail outlet in Shelburne, VT.
Land Rover TReK, launched in 1996, is a unique challenge designed to
enhance the spirit and enthusiasm of all Land Rover retail employees. Three-
member teams representing individual retail outlets from around the country
compete against one another in a friendly -- but still highly competitive --
contest of skill and endurance. The competition involves numerous physically
and mentally rigorous tasks, including written logic quizzes, orienteering,
rally-type navigation, running, canoe racing, bike racing, and precision off-
road driving. Completing the twelve-hour trial takes teamwork and
determination, and challenges the endurance, product knowledge and off-road
driving skill of each participating team.
As with the regional events, the final round will be a test of skill and
endurance, and is expected to be equally, if not more, intense and
challenging. Bob Burns, training and development manager for Land Rover North
America and the director of Land Rover TReK '99, said, "All of the teams
should be commended for the effort they have put forward in TReK '99. The
level of enthusiasm has been great. This is team building. This is what
working at a Land Rover Centre is all about."
The competition benefits both Land Rover North America and its network of
retailers by building enthusiasm for the Land Rover brand and strengthening
the sense of belonging to a successful team. According to a recent National
Automobile Dealers Association survey, Land Rover retailers lead the industry
in salesperson retention rates. Land Rover also placed fourth in the 1998
J.D. Power and Associates Sales Satisfaction Index. Core to Land Rover's
success in the U.S. market is its network of 119 retail outlets, which
includes 75 Land Rover Centres, unique, stand-alone facilities that provide
the highest levels of expertise for Land Rover vehicles and a host of related
products and benefits to owners. Land Rover has plans to open four new Land
Rover Centres in 1999.
"While other automobile companies talk about off-road driving, ruggedness
and the pursuit of adventure, Land Rover lives it," said Charles R. Hughes,
president of Land Rover North America. "Our Land Rover Centres, and events
like TReK, give us an opportunity to channel employee enthusiasm for the
brand. After all, there's more to the automobile business than just lease
rates and sales pitches. The automobile business can be fun."
Land Rover North America, Inc., established in 1986, imports Range Rovers
and Discoverys manufactured in Solihull, England, for sale in North America
and is a wholly owned subsidiary of The BMW Group, Munich, Germany.
