Federal-Mogul Avilla, Indiana Lighting Plant Wins Indiana Quality Award
    SOUTHFIELD, Mich., May 25 -- Federal-Mogul Corporation's
, Lighting Products group today announced that its Avilla, Indiana
facility received the State of Indiana Quality Improvement Award, presented by
the state's Lieutenant Governor, Joe Kernan.  The award is administered by the
Indiana Business Modernization and Technology (BMT) Corporation.
    The award recognizes manufacturers and other organizations that achieve
measurable progress in improving quality.  The Avilla plant received the award
for improvements in on-time delivery, reductions of inventories, and
management's implementation of Kaizen practices, where cross-functional teams
dissect manufacturing operations to reduce or eliminate waste.
    "We're proud of our workforce and the contributions made by all employees
that helped us achieve this team accomplishment," said Brian Banwart, Avilla's
plant manager.  "We've worked hard to improve the quality systems in our
operations to ensure our customers receive superior products."
    A few key improvements include:
    *  On-time delivery rate of 96% or better during the past six months.
    *  Inventory reduction of 36% in the last twelve months.
    *  Implementation of Kaizen, which practices reduction of inventory, floor
       space, rework, scrap, inspection time and paperwork.
    *  Raw material inventory level was 15.1 turns per year in March 1998;
       finished goods inventory now exceeds 50 turns per year.

    Del Sohuh, president of BMT, said the award is designed to foster
continuous improvement.  "The award is an expression of public support for the
highest standards of quality leadership and achievement by Hoosier
organizations," he said.
    The Avilla facility manufacturers Zanxx brand products, including
electromechanical assemblies, such as sockets, connectors and switches used in
automotive lighting systems, and custom injection-molded products for non-
automotive applications.
    Federal-Mogul Lighting Products include well-known brand names such as
Wagner and Blazer lighting products, Zanxx sockets and connectors and Signal-
Stat lighting and safety products.
