U.S. Army Wins Presidential/EPA Award for Their Retread Tire Program
PACIFIC GROVE, Calif., May 21 -- The U.S. Army TACOM
(Tank-Automotive & Armaments Command) Team Tire Group won the Affirmative
Procurement category of the White House Closing the Circle Award sponsored by
the Office of the Federal Environmental Executive.
According to Fran McPoland, the Federal Environmental Executive, TACOM
offers a retread tire program for both military and civilian vehicles. In
fiscal year '98, more than 2,500 tires were retreaded under this program,
resulting in cost savings of $540,000.
"Under TACOM's leadership, the federal government will continue to meet
the President's directive to use retread tires on our vehicles. As TACOM has
demonstrated, we can cost-effectively purchase a quality recycled product
-- retread tires -- without compromising on our performance needs," said
McPoland.
The award was won for developing and implementing TACOM's Tire Retread
Program.
The U.S. Army has long been a supporter of retreaded tires as a way of
saving money and helping the environment without sacrificing safety or
performance.
TACOM's Team Tire is the leading government agency implementing
Executive Order 13101 and EPA guidelines mandating the use of retreaded tires.
