AM General Announces New GMAC SmartLease(R) Availability for Hummer 
    SOUTH BEND, Ind., May 17 -- AM General Corporation has
announced the availability of a new lease program for its new 1999 Hummer
vehicles.  Effective immediately the popular GMAC SmartLease is available
through Hummer dealers.
    "We have worked hard to provide our dealers with the best lease program
for the best off-road vehicle," said James A. Armour, president and chief
executive officer of AM General Corp.
    "We're proud to have Hummer teamed with GMAC Financial Services and to
offer their outstanding SmartLease.  SmartLease is well-known and well-
received by the public.  The advantages of a Hummer are now available through
the advantages of leasing."
    SmartLease is available for all new 1999 Hummers with 36- or 39-month term
options.
    "GMAC SmartLease makes it easier and more affordable for people to move up
to a Hummer," said Richard D. Karnes, director of North American sales and
dealer operations.  "Current owners who want to upgrade to the new TorqTrac
4(TM) traction control system and other 1999 updates can make that move more
easily as well.  In either case, customers will have a trustworthy lease
program to help them get what they want."
    The 1999 Hummer features the new traction control system plus anti-lock
brakes, which make it easier to drive both on and off-road.  TorqTrac 4
simplifies Hummer operations by automatically engaging when it senses a wheel
slipping.
