Federal-Mogul Hampton, Virginia Lighting Plant Wins Shingo Prize For Manufacturing Excellence
    SOUTHFIELD, Mich., May 13 -- Federal-Mogul Corporation's
, Lighting Products group today announced that its Hampton,
Virginia facility received the Shingo Prize for manufacturing excellence,
awarded by the National Association of Manufacturers and the Utah State
University College of Business.
"It's an honor to receive an award for accomplishments in lean
manufacturing and innovation because we believe our success in these areas
sets us apart from other lighting suppliers," says Terry Graessle, vice
president and general manager, Federal-Mogul Lighting Products.
The award, named for the Japanese industrial engineer, Shigeo Shingo, who
distinguished himself as one of the world's leading experts in improving the
manufacturing process, is given to North American manufacturers whose
manufacturing facility excels in several areas. They are:

    * Management culture and infrastructure (leadership and empowerment)
    * Manufacturing business strategy and systems integration (vision, market
and product innovation, world- class operations and partnerships)
    * Measured quality, productivity and customer service

To receive the Shingo Prize, companies submit achievement reports that
document manufacturing excellence. A five-person Board of Examiners reviews
the reports, makes a three-day intensive investigation into each site's
management and manufacturing practices, and determines the winners.
The Federal-Mogul Hampton plant is one of six facilities to receive the
award at the 11th Annual "Quest for World-Class Manufacturing" Conference and
Awards Ceremony on June 10 at the Hyatt Regency in Columbus, Ohio. During the
last 11 years, 51 corporations have received the Shingo Prize.
The Hampton plant has won numerous awards for manufacturing excellence,
including the 1998 and 1999 PACE Award (Premier Automotive suppliers
Contributions to Excellence) given by Automotive News and Ernst and Young LLP,
and Industry Week's top 10 Manufacturing Plants. The plant has also received
several awards from automakers, including Chrysler's Pentastar, and has been
