MTS Systems Receives Order for Revolutionary Rolling Road Systems
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., May 13 -- MTS Systems Corp.
has been awarded a contract for two multi-million dollar wind
tunnel Flat-Trac(R) Rolling Road Systems by the German Research Institute of
Automotive Engineering and Vehicle Engines Stuttgart (FKFS).
"These systems will be installed in two existing wind tunnels at FKFS to
test passenger cars and race cars," according to Bill Beduhn, MTS vice
president for Advanced Systems. "The wind tunnels, with the addition of the
Flat-Trac Rolling Roads, will provide proper ground effect simulation to study
the aerodynamics of the underside of vehicles and perform additional tests in
the wind tunnel laboratory environment which currently are performed only on
the test track or on the road," he said.
"This full scale Flat-Trac Rolling Road system is a unique, first of its
kind in the world," said Beduhn. "By providing proper ground effect
simulation while simultaneously providing a true flat surface, it will allow
tests to be performed in the wind tunnel which now can only be performed on
the road and track."
MTS Systems Corporation, with annual revenues of approximately $350
million and 2,500 employees worldwide, manufactures computer-based testing and
simulation systems for determining the mechanical and acoustic behavior and
performance of materials, products and structures. MTS also develops and
markets measurement and control instrumentation products for automating
manufacturing processes. MTS customers include the world's industrial
companies, as well as government and university laboratories. Additional
information on MTS can be found on the World Wide Web at http://www.mts.com
FKFS is a non-profit institute located on the grounds of the University of
Stuttgart, Germany. The present investment is financially sponsored by the
major German automotive manufacturers of DaimlerChrysler AG and General
Motors/Adam Opel AG and FKFS. Laboratory wind tunnel testing is performed for
all major worldwide automotive manufacturers and many racing teams throughout
Europe.
