UAW Makes $25,000 Donation to American Red Cross Midwest Tornado Fund For Oklahoma and Kansas Disaster Relief
DETROIT, May 7 -- The UAW is donating $25,000 to the American
Red Cross Midwest Tornado Fund in support of disaster relief efforts in
Oklahoma and Kansas following the devastating tornadoes on May 3 that have
killed or injured scores of people and left thousands homeless.
In announcing the donation today, UAW President Stephen P. Yokich said,
"Our hearts go out to the many families affected by this terrible disaster.
The UAW is a vital part of the Oklahoma City and Wichita, Kansas communities
and we are pleased to be able to make this donation to the American Red Cross
for their important relief work."
"The UAW will also provide additional resources to assist our members and
retirees, and others in those communities, during this difficult period," said
Secretary Treasurer Ruben Burks, adding, "There is a lot that needs to be done
right now and we are glad to contribute our experience in coping with
disasters like this."
The UAW Community Services Department has sent a Disaster Relief Team to
Oklahoma and Kansas to assist UAW members, retirees and their families. The
team will also assist in coordinating disaster relief efforts between the
American Red Cross and various local and federal agencies.
