New OSHA Forklift Law Means Changes for Industry; Dec. 1, 1999, the Deadline for Compliance
SUNRISE, Fla.--May 7, 1999--A new federal safety law means more schooling for forklift operators, additional compliance headaches for business owners and a deadline from Uncle Sam that demands results before the year is out.The new legislation, 29 CFR 1910.178, part of OSHA's regulations that provide for employee job safety and health protection, require all workers operating any powered industrial truck to be trained, evaluated and certified under revised guidelines. The deadline for compliance is Dec. 1, 1999.
This law also mandates that persons hired after Dec. 1, 1999, not be permitted to operate equipment until after the training is complete and affects even those workers who received training and certification while employed by another company. Businesses have until the deadline to comply or be subject to federal fines that could be as high as $7,000.00 per violation.
