'Pennzoil 400' New Name for Miami NASCAR Winston Cup Series Race
HOMESTEAD, Fla.--May 7, 1999--Executives of Homestead-Miami Speedway announced today that South Florida's inaugural NASCAR Winston Cup race has a new name - the Pennzoil 400.The event will be held Nov. 14, 1999, and will be the first NASCAR Winston Cup race at the four-year-old, state-of-the-art facility. The race was originally sponsored by Jiffy Lube, one of Pennzoil-Quaker State Company's retail oil change center brands, but will switch to Pennzoil, the nation's top-selling motor oil brand.
"Jiffy Lube, America's largest franchiser of fast lube centers, is a strong and recognizable brand, but it is already the title sponsor of a NASCAR Winston Cup event held at New Hampshire International Speedway," said Tom Floyd, senior vice president, lubricants marketing, for Pennzoil-Quaker State Company. "By changing its title sponsor from Jiffy Lube to Pennzoil, the Miami event provides a unique opportunity for the Pennzoil brand to bring an important race to the many Pennzoil race fans."
Brian Skuza, president of Homestead-Miami Speedway, echoed Floyd's enthusiasm. "We're confident that unprecedented exposure will be delivered for the Pennzoil brand," said Skuza. "The success and popularity of NASCAR, coupled with beautiful South Florida, one of the largest and most dynamic markets in North America, will mean great success for any sponsor, particularly Pennzoil."
During the Nov. 12-14 weekend, the Miami 300, the 1999 NASCAR Busch Series finale, will take place on Saturday, and the inaugural NASCAR Winston Cup Pennzoil 400 will take place on Sunday. Both races will be televised live on NBC, the first live NASCAR events ever televised by that network.
